I unfortunately don't have a lot of BTC technical writing, but a few technical research papers on DeFi and general blockchain related topics. I'd love to polish my writing and research skills and especially spend more time on Bitcoin.

Lightning the is most interesting - mainly because it has garnered the most adoption. Between exchanges, merchants and wallets, lightning has, in comparison to other L2s dominated.
I still think that technically, lightning (and all L2s) have a lot of drawbacks, mainly around centralization. In a lot of ways, Liquid poses as a better decentralized contender, but I understand it also falls short because it's limited by blockspace. Although, it has faster finality, better liquidity management and a simpler UX, it just hasn't achieved enough adoption.

Which L2 ?
For me lightning remains the most interesting L2 protocol. With a 118% increase average capacity per channel in the past five years, it is gaining adoption. Research and development like TRUC transactions, pay-to-anchor, splicing, dual-funded channels etc. makes the space exciting and promising.

    IMO, the Lightning Network is the most interesting L2 protocol for bitcoin because it helps bitcoin adoption. Fast and cheaper transactions equals more adoption.

Which current layer two protocol for bitcoin is the most interesting and why?

Ark. Here's my reasoning:

  1. It attacks the actual UX bottleneck of Lightning. Lightning's channel/liquidity management is the #1 adoption blocker — users must lock up capital, pick peers, and manage rebalancing. Ark replaces that with a single unilateral on-chain transaction: the user sends to a virtual UTXO (vTXO) controlled by an Ark Service Provider (ASP), and can then make payments off-chain in either direction without ever opening a channel. The onboarding story ("pay with one on-chain tx, receive instantly, self-custody with a timelock exit") is the closest thing to a bank-like UX Bitcoin has produced.
  2. The trust model is honest and bounded. The ASP can't steal funds outright — the user always holds a unilateral exit via the shared UTXO tree and a timelock. That's a strict improvement over custodial Lightning providers, and it keeps "not your keys" structurally intact rather than relying on promises.
  3. It's live, not vapor. Ark is running on mainnet with real users (confirmed in the aioapex 2026 L2 survey and spark.money's L2 comparison), and the design keeps evolving in public — ASP specs, covenants discussion, and the Ark v2 roadmap. For a bi-weekly writeup that's a gift: a continuous stream of protocol discussion, implementation progress, and honest failure analysis to report on.
  4. Why not Lightning/BitVM for the answer: Lightning is the incumbent — the most-used L2 by volume (~5,000 BTC in channel capacity) but its liquidity UX is exactly the problem Ark targets; BitVM2 is the most intellectually exciting (fraud-proof programmability on Bitcoin without a soft fork) but it's still closer to research than to something a non-technical user can touch today. Ark sits in the sweet spot: novel enough to be interesting, deployed enough to be reportable.

Ark is the most intersting L2 for me because the how it reduces the onchain footprint by allowing offchain transactions, saving on blockspace. There is no direct linke betwen sender and reciever so it enhaces privacy, with immediately creditable and spendable transactions. This improves BItcoin adoption and i think if integrated with lightning, they would perfom significantly due to their complementary tradeoffs. The flexibility that Taproot script offers is also a feature that I find intruguing.
