I really appreciate the fact that you can directly migrate and upgrade from within the legacy app. Only takes a couple taps too. Kudos to the dev team!
I think very few people can be argued into faith. I did hear an argument for faith in God (not for the existence of God funnily enough) that was the straw on the camel's back. However, I was already receptive at that point. If it wasn't for all the things I experienced previously, I would have rejected that argument outright.
I've changed my mind on politics a lot.
- Apolitical
- Social Democrat (I was a Bernie bro lol)
- Left-leaning Libertarian
- Minarchist
- Anarcho-capitalist
- Monarchist
Now I don't really subscribe to any political ideology. My religion now informs my politics and worldview in general.
Here's my journey:
Protestant -> Agnostic -> Militant Atheist/Anti-theist -> Pro Religion Atheist -> Eastern Orthodox Christian
I don't think that Bitcoin will ever go to zero. I think it will always have some value. If Weimar Marks still have a little value now due to its collector and historical value, Bitcoin will have have a nonzero value.
Almost every comment I've read so far seems to agree that the worst case scenario is stagnation and irrelevance. I'm inclined to agree.
People who criticize Bitcoiners saying they're part of a religion or cult are not entirely wrong. There are people who treat Bitcoin as a god and Satoshi as a prophet/savior, unknowingly or not.
I think something that this community struggles with is the reality of human nature. I think its because Bitcoin tends to attract more technical, libertarian-minded, individualistic people.
Don't get me wrong, I would prefer if everyone self-custodied their sats. But that's not going to be the case. Some people due to differences in intelligence, personality, culture, interests, skills, etc. will simply opt for custodial solutions no matter the education or arguments given to them. Humans have logic as a tool in their toolset. We are not inherently logical beings. Not to mention, Bitcoin is permissionless so anyone could set up a custodial service that people will flock to.
The key here I think is make self-custody as easy and enjoyable as possible. Maximize the number of people who own their own keys. We will probably need to make the UX almost indistinguishable from custodial UX. We should also engineer trustworthy, accountable custodial solutions as well. We can't neglect that, otherwise people with less savory intentions will do it in our stead.
I recall there is a project that basically acts as a federated bank built on Bitcoin but I cannot remember what the project was called. I believe it could be used to help solve this problem.
I believe you're thinking of Federated Chaumian e-Cash.
Don't know if this counts but you do it automatically any time you use a Nostr application. Signing a message manually, though? Nope. Never needed to.
I think one of the issues is that its a closed ecosystem with no easy way to interact with the rest of the fiat world. What's the point of having USD if you can't easily spend it where ever you go? This is a general problem with building stablecoins on Bitcoin in general.
You could go to Bitrefill and buy gift cards using stablecoins like this but that adds a layer of extra actions/complexity that users probably don't want to deal with. Its unlikely that a lot of vendors accept these stablecoins too. I would go as far as to say that there are more vendors willing to accept just straight sats rather than stablecoins backed by sats.
I'm not against the idea of stablecoins on Bitcoin, but adoption is hard.
The next update of iOS will enable side loading apps if you live in the EU. Apple will absolutely drag its feet as long as possible when it comes to giving users more freedom.
The question I guess is whether the dev would even be interested in Lightning. This was on HN and the HN type tend to be hostile to Bitcoin.
Fiat based Stacker News. Better than normal reddit in terms of revenue model but a SN-like model would be the best imo.
I'm not here to discourage bad behavior. However if I see, it I'm not going to leave it be. I'll at the very least speak up about it and/or call the individual out.
Encouraging the good is definitely the better way, but that doesn't make negative feedback any less necessary. Everyone does bad things from time to time, despite all the encouragement in the world to do good. Although their number is tiny, we can't ignore those who do evil because its pleasurable to them.
We have a responsibility to keep each other accountable in proportional ways. Even the Lightning network has watchtowers and penalty transactions for when people try to cheat. Proportionality is the key here. We should strive for the golden mean. Your email example is perfect. People have definitely done evil with email. That doesn't mean we install a mass surveillance state. That would be a gross overreaction.
