Howdy frens! đ¤
âď¸ With summer just around the corner, I started wonderingâdo any of you have âsummer readsâ? I donât really have a set list myself, but Iâd love to hear if you do, or if you have any books youâre planning to dive into as the days get longer. Please share your picks if you have them!
Thinking back, I realized I donât always read seasonally, but last summer I finished the final volume of The Boys comic series. I absolutely loved the comicsâthe show is okay, but the original has more than just shock value. Thereâs real history and depth, and even though it has its moments of pure ridiculousness, I was hooked from start to finish.
đ But the book that really stuck with me was one I read three summers ago: Unorthodox, The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman. What a ride! I couldnât put it down until I finished. Even when it was painful and I was suffering right along with her, I just had to know what happened next.
đď¸The book follows Feldmanâs childhood and her escape from her tightly knit Satmar Hasidic community. She was born into a world where every aspect of her life was dictated by strict Orthodox Jewish practice, leaving her with almost no control over her own choices or body. While her story is deeply rooted in her religious upbringing, the struggle for autonomy and self-determination is something many women around the world can relate to, regardless of background or belief.
Feldmanâs storytelling is grippingâshe takes you by the hand and doesnât let go until the very end.
Thereâs a Netflix adaptation, but honestly, I prefer the book. The series is very loosely based on her story, and for me, it loses the intense claustrophobia and emotional impact that made the memoir so powerful.
Reading about her lifeâhow so many things were decided for her, from school to marriageâwas truly heartbreaking. It made me reflect on how difficult it can be to break free from a path that seems set in stone.
So, have you read Unorthodox? Do you have any recommendations to add to my never-ending list of books? Or maybe a summer favourite youâd like to share?
See yâall soon, and godspeed!
