My recollection is that Obama just unfroze stolen Iranian funds, which is not the same as giving them money.

Yep, and I suspect it was a part of getting them to sign a nuclear treaty and comply. I'm not fan of Iran's gov but it's foolish to take US politicians at their word as well.

I think they were frozen funds from previous sanctions that the US wasn't able to use for anything. Perhaps they were delivered as cash. That rings a bell.
