So, I've stuck with that now about 3.5 months. But, I just installed a podcast app again, with some of the same podcasters (carnivore and bitcoin oriented, a little bit of politics).
Why? I'm feeling a little disconnected, a little like I'm not getting important news, not getting introduced to new ideas. Lonely, maybe.
I don't know which time, specifically, that I'm going to be using to listen to podcasts. It's not like I have a boatload of time that's not otherwise occupied. And I can't listen to podcasts and do anything else, unless I don't need to think at all (for instance during exercise, or cleaning, things like that)
I'll try this for a while, and see what it's like. Part of the problem is that podcast titles often over-promise and under-deliver. Then you've spent 30 minutes to an hour, and have really come away with nothing, except having some talk fill up your mind.
Well, I'll see how it goes. Thoughts?

I go back and forth on this issue. Even though a lot of time is sunk into listening to a bunch of podcasts, I get ideas that I hadn't thought about before. This is probably why I persist.
Also there are some podcasts that are relatively small like This Week in Bitcoin, Bitcoin And..., The Reorg, Watchman Privacy etc. If you find that one is boring you it's so easy to try a new one for a fresh take.

Come to think of it, I got introduced to the Carnivore diet, indirectly, via a podcast. And that's been extremely valuable for me.
How it happened was that I listened to an interview with Nina Teicholtz, author of The Big Fat Surprise, on The Bitcoin Standard podcast, then read her book. I realized how bad standard nutritional advice was, then read a few books on carnivore, then started with carnivore.
That's only the one that pops in my head first, I know there's lot of other ideas I've been exposed to via podcasts.
But the time suck of podcasts...ugh

I think if you frame podcasts as a relaxing activity instead of a must-be productive pursuit, you will give yourself the grace to just enjoy. You mayn’t learn anything particularly useful from those podcasts, but maybe the fact that you managed to put aside everything else and just go with the flow could make you feel more in control.
At least that’s how I feel with my YouTube or Netflix watching haha

I have stopped as well, or actually, I have only been listening to the Duran podcast recently, and I almost don't read or interact on bitcoin stuff anymore...

I haven't been listening to podcasts lately either. I think it might be because I've had more to think about. I'd normally listen to podcasts on walks, but that's prime thinking real estate.
reply
I like the "prime thinking real estate". So true.
Reflecting a little - I'm probably just a little discontented/searching because the main project I'm working on is a little frustrating right now.

When you posted "I stopped listening to podcasts. Now I'm about twice as productive"...
I remember the main concept of it made me think a lot, since at that time, just like now, I'm a podcast consumer, let's say, increasing! And reading a post from someone who was already quitting them got me really curious!
It's been a while since then...

Listen to things outside your central interests, is my advice. W btc stuff esp it's easy to get spun up looking for hopium, confirmation of what you already think, evidence that you're awesome and soon to be rich. At least that's what happens to me.
Find podcasts on literature and philosophy or whatever. That can be joyous and you're unlikely to fall into euphoria loops.

i'd largely agree with this. Like most things, a mindful approach is best. personally, when it becomes habitual or void-filling then its inherently less enjoyable.
any literature podcast suggestions, elvis?
reply
Interesting idea. So far I've stuck to topics that are my central passions.
Maybe I'll try to expand my horizons.

For me podcasts are time killers and I avoid them. As you said - podcasts over-promise and under-deliver. I used to listen while driving and now I find more joy in music. I must say I do prefer TedTalks and even those I pick them carefully cause those are also worth watching. What I can tell you in relation to feeling disconnected and out of reality, start reading news - pick 1-2 trusted sources and read news for 10-15 minutes in the morning - skim through headlines and intros. In general you get most of the info from there if the sources are good. Your focus and productivity will improve if you avoid podcasts.

Substack (along with stacker.news) used to be the trusted news source that I would go to, regularly.
But in the past couple months, it seems different. More dopamine driven, more click-baity, less thoughtful.
What news sources do you like?
reply
I feel it the same about all news lately. People need dopamine more and more. For news I use AP, CNN, NY post, Huff post, The Guardian, etc.

You could for example download on your pc and then watch 10 minutes every time you have time.
reply
watching something in fractions never worked for me.
reply
It doesn't work for everyone. But for some works.

I just listen to whatever Lyn Alden is on. That means I don't have to listen to podcasts daily, and it's going to be something that I personally find to he educational and interesting

This, I would think, would be the main benefit of no podcasting, no...?
