I'm hoping too look at some of the many projects Tether supports in Part II.

I’ll see if I can find it, I have a few ideas.
I had to cut about a third because I was worried no one would read something so long.

very good breakdown. Finally somebody is paying attention

What will the history books write about this? I could see it going either way. Some people say it’s just a scam and never passed an audit. Don’t trust verify, just like the US Bitcoin reserves lol

What I find most ridiculous is that $100k minimum redeem. Their ads say you can always swap 1 for 1, but then you've got this massive limit. I get that there needs to be a minimum, but not that much!
reply
You can probably trade anything less than $100k at any of the big exchanges.
reply
Yeah, you can do it, but it’s not a 1:1 ratio. Feels those limit they use to stop a bank run.

Interesting point. I wonder if i could find out demographics of their holders: mostly small scale or mainly large with the small fry not actually making too large a percent of the total issuance.
reply
I’ll look into it, but it’s probably not gonna be easy. Tether’s like a pitch-black room!

  • The top 100 addresses hold around 37% of the total supply, down from 41% in 2023, indicating improved distribution.
  • The average USDT wallet holds about $970, although this figure varies widely between exchanges and self-custody wallets.
  • Over 43 million USDT transfers were recorded on-chain in January 2025 alone.
  • DEX transaction volume using Tether exceeded $19 billion in February 2025.
  • Tether is among the top 3 most used assets on Ethereum, Tron, and Arbitrum by daily transaction count.
  • On Tron, Tether is the most transferred token, averaging 4.1 million transactions per week.

i'll take the relative simplicity of bitcoin/lightning over all this
Bitcoin is 'operated' by ..... no-one, it is a protocol
or should we say say several thousands of anonymous node-runners spanning dozens of geopolitical jurisdictions? the only thing they are 'operating,' though, is their own node.
reply
Indeed, and yet...Tether marches on. At the end of the day, I think they may be serving different uses...but this may be a weaker claim than I realize.

Why is Tether (USDT) even called cryptocurrency? Doesn't look like it has any of the qualities you would expect a cryptocurrency to have, other than a blockchain, which they frequently reroll or mute. With information here, they are even more "unreputable"
reply
It is distinct from most of the other altcoin projects that got started in the 2012-2014 era. Perhaps that is what made them so successful. Most of the other early altcoins are gone now (Litecoin is an strong exception).

Fair point. I was going through the CMC top coins in top 100, and nearly all of the coins are either defunct or faded into extreme obscurity. Mostly Litecoin & DigiByte & Doge and maybe Peercoin and Feathercoin to an extent.
Given the nature of Tether, would it not be FUDded out of existence? Back in 2014 I would expect users to never use Tether since cryptocurrency as a whole was very niche and Bitcoiners were usually developers, no?

Honestly, I had the opposite impression. Most of the early stuff around bitcoin is wild, but what I see is people who thought outside the box and didn't give up.
Also: it's really interesting how creating exchanges was such an important part of bitcoin history.
reply
Yeah but the lawsuits possibly stealing code. Even in a challenging regulatory environment you don’t have to come off shady as some of the stories report
