Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.
Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!
We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
When we compare two or more items, Different is usually followed by from.
Can we also use different to?

When will people stop using LLM output as their written voice? Use AI to help you think or get something done, but presenting it as you debases you. If anything, you should be the last mile not it. Otherwise it severs any connection I might have to you.
reply
A lot of times people say that english isn't their first language and they use the AI to translate their thoughts.
I try to imagine myself participating on a foreign language message board and how i'd go about doing that without the help of AI.

I have a feeling if you write in your native language and then toss it in google translate, it doesn't come out like ai stuff...
reply
I can guarantee that! I have two languages that I can use fluently and the Google translations don’t work for me. I also notice that the translations from Japanese to English in anime really doesn’t always fit either. Perhaps language is really a human thing.

you wouldn't
I don't believe them that they can read English but not write it—or can't read English and enjoy being here enough to make up for having to translate everything first and then translate their replies back into English with AI

I wrote this after reading an AI assisted tweet from a native English speaker. Also there’s a wide line between translation and AI content.
reply
Absolutely. I read in English and write very badly. I use Google translator for some of the things I have doubts about in terms of text construction. I'm learning at the same time as I want to be a good compere.

I must've missed the Szabo essay titled Creating a Generic, Noncustodial Micropayment System is Really Hard.
I'm refactoring1 SN's cardiovascular system and it's difficult to express how challenging it is to associate asynchronous payments2 with otherwise independent data.3
If non-custodial4 micropayments ever become a thing, there's an opportunity for making a B2B product that make this kind of thing easy.

Footnotes

  1. I'm ashamed to say it's practically a rewrite considering how much code is changing.
  2. Non-trivial on the face of it, but especially with expectations that payments fan-out to multiple places depending on the action that's being performed, there's an ability to prove payments happened, and everything can still be audited. Add to it supporting a custodial crediting system as a fallback.
  3. It probably goes without saying, but especially if you want to do it well ... meaning, if we're sticking with the cardiovascular metaphor, it can support the organism through radical changes and growth and still be resilient.
  4. Custodial is non-trivial too, but at least an order of magnitude less so.

I wonder if in some sense you're single handedly trying to reinvent the wheel of our entire credit/debt system. There's definitely a flavor of that in the issues you're dealing with. Things would be so much easier if you allowed yourself to issue credit and float payments

With Tuning Yourself to Moments of Awe, Rick Rubin sparks a reminder of our fortnightly appointment, to brainstorm ideas and bring projects forward. Similar to the Stacker Saloon, this post it will stay pinned in the ~Design territory hot section for two weeks, recursively, giving us time to discuss and provide feedback.
Whatever you are thinking about... A new app? Book? Review your apartment furniture setup following feng shui? Upgrading your 4x4 suspensions? 3D print something for your miner? Redesign your garden yard? What else?

I'm noticing more bots these days. Hope they aren't getting too many sats! I downzap when I see one.
reply
When I notice something fishy, I just ignore it. I don’t zap or downzap or even answer. Fish is fish.

I downzapped a lot yesterday.
The item you've downzapped can become un-outlawed, I wonder it's worth a notification if this happens so I can re-downzap the scoundrel.
reply
23 sats \ 6 replies \ @Scoresby 21h
maybe the question is why are people zapping such items? I'm sure i've accidentally done it a number of times, but it's not too common. Is it all just mistake zaps?
reply
I definitely fumbled yesterday while re-downzapping and zapped 200 instead.
I long-pressed to customize the amount but I was jumping between comments and didn't realize I hadn't already dz'ed it.
reply
157 sats \ 4 replies \ @ek 20h
if you already downzapped it, long press should downzap it more
reply
Yeah I was on a dz spree in smallish increments and was using the flag, then I got to a comment that I hadn’t dz’ed and just zapped sats, zapper error.
Also just noticed that there actually isn’t a long press for the flag, just a left click, not that it’s needed.
that's pretty slick! I didn't realize this was the case. I always go to the menu and downzap from there...
Morning guys....!!

Happiness Journal 5/8/25
Could have gone home earlier today, but stayed on to assess my fifth graders’ audio responses that they had earlier submitted. As you might expect, most of them didn’t take it seriously and left me fighting off the snooze monster with their half-hearted responses. But their lackluster attitude left barely a dent in my exemplary professionalism, so I managed to leave school today, having listened to and marked 30 students’ work.
As tedious as marking was, I’m glad that the oral component now comprises a higher composition (20%) of their final grade. It prompted me to notice the sparks of brilliance among these children. One boy must be particularly conscious about time, as seen by how he not only used “in the near future”, but uttered “in the long run”. Another boy dazzled me with how mature he came across via sound waves. He repeated “The reason why I’m interested…”sensibly, a far cry from the animated and clownish expressions he pulls off in class to get my attention. A girl, who has been giving me lotsa grief about homework, finally made me smile by illustrating how other people might gravitate towards martial arts, but not her.
