What exactly is Stacker News?

Stacker News is a forum similar to Reddit or Hacker News. Unlike on Reddit or Hacker News where you earn "upvotes" or "karma" that are not redeemable or transferable, on SN you earn sats for creating and curating content.

The real definition of SN, may be far beyond what you thought it is

What Stacker News really is

SN is far more than just a forum where you can earn sats for posting or curating content, it’s a training ground for personal sovereignty. Yes, the sats are real and redeemable, unlike Reddit’s karma or Hacker News upvotes. But the sats are merely a by-product, not the mission. The true purpose is to sharpen your ability to create value, think critically, and engage in a proof-of-work culture.
And having enjoying different great and powerful posts and comments such as:
The zen of stacking sats, here, #184545
The art of using SN, here, #252695
The zen and the art of posting on SN, here, #1069786
The art of using SN part 2, here, #392551 There's one great lesson and reminder that the sats isn't the goal.
Too many newcomers approach SN like a quick-win lottery—chasing free sats without genuine contribution. That mindset not only leads to low-effort posts but also opens the door to impersonation and scams by fiat fiat-minded assmilkers. It misses the deeper opportunity: learning how to live, think, and transact outside the matrix.
Each post, comment, or zap on SN is a micro-exercise in economic freedom. You’re practicing how to exchange value directly, without middlemen. You’re building trust through reputation earned over time, not bought or faked. The sats you earn are simply the scoreboard; the real prize is mastering the mindset and skills to operate in a world where individuals regain freedom and sovereignty.
If you come for sats, you may leave with pennies. If you come for knowledge, you may leave with freedom.

Well said. SN is more dojo than casino
reply
Cool analogy! Almost like a dojo where you have to pay a small fee every time you get on the mats.

Very inspiring way of looking at it.
Too many newcomers approach SN like a quick-win lottery—chasing free sats without genuine contribution. That mindset not only leads to low-effort posts but also opens the door to impersonation and scams by fiat fiat-minded assmilkers.
How do you see paying to post fitting in to this dynamic? Would there be fewer low value posts if posting/commenting fees were higher?
reply
That's a good observation. Well, I see posting fees as a useful filter, but not the main cure. Higher fees might reduce low-value posts, but they can also discourage new voices who could grow into valuable contributors with the right guidance. @DarthCoin is very good at guiding the right path where fiat-mindset naturally vanishes through the power of learning.
The deeper fix is cultural—getting people to understand that SN isn’t about “pay to play” or “earn for free,” it’s about proof of work. If users approach SN as a place to sharpen thinking, build trust, and create value, the incentive naturally aligns. Fees then become a small friction that rewards intentionality rather than a gate that just blocks entry. So, yes, "make them pay".
If the mindset stay fiat-minded, people will still try to game the system—whether fees is 1 sat or 1,000 sats. Change the culture, and the fees simply help amplify it.

it takes a while to get into SN and the CC probably confuses noobs, but if they can make it past that, hopefully they stick around
