In today’s Daily Discussion Thread by @k00b, I suggested that anyone who owns bitcoin should take the time to write down their reason(s) for being a Bitcoiner.
Why bother with this exercise?
- It’s good practice to be able to externalize your goals and reasons for doing anything; it helps optimize one’s life.
- To help guide future decisions (ie. Is Bitcoin still serving my needs? Do I need more? Or do I need to re-assess this relationship?)
- When trying to explain to others why and how I use Bitcoin, I’ve been guilty of throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, often just confusing people with my rantings. I recognize this as a personal shortcoming that I can improve. Before talking to others about Bitcoin, it would help to have my own goals and thoughts clearly formed – whether I’m simply having a discussion, answering questions from non-Bitcoiners, or trying to orange-pill someone, why not go into the conversation prepared?
This is not a new idea. Good investors often have an ‘investing policy statements’. But with all of the FUD that goes around in the crypto space, I think Bitcoiners in particular could benefit from having something similar.
It does not need to be long or complex. Simply ask yourself, ”Why do I use Bitcoin?”
I took 15 minutes this morning to work out mine. Here it goes...
MY BITCOIN PURPOSE STATEMENT (v1):
I hold Bitcoin in order to keep my family’s wealth beyond the reach of those who would surveil, freeze, confiscate, steal, or otherwise prevent us from using it whenever, wherever, with whom ever and for whatever purpose we see fit.
I participate in and contribute to the Bitcoin community because I want to help others do the same for themselves.

By sharing this I’m hoping others will write and share their own statements. And please give me your sincere/honest critique.
