Anyone who ends up regularly using SN is already a stacker (they just don't know it yet).
reply
I'm assuming there's an inherent quality of being a stacker and it will eventually manifest in appreciating Stacker News.
reply
Yes right. Anyone can be stacker, we just can't be prejudiced. I've seen, including myself, learn a lot from SN. So, I believe anyone who's open to learning would love and praise SN.
I was thinking how we can attract new and non bitcoin people to SN and then turning them into stackers or Botcoiners (I believe both are synonymous).
Yes, the process was much simpler before the transition to "attach wallet" but it's what it is we need to find ways on how to do it.

@siggy47 and @grayruby are certainly up there with much more thoughts on it than all of us together.
I agree it's still foreign and scary, but then we risk SN remaining as it is or slightly more for a long time because I don't think Bitcoin is gonna be native to everyone overnight. However I also think that SN can be a huge tool to make Bitcoin native to more and more people but it needs to open up and speed up a bit.

Despite my attempts, I'm starting to agree with @Undisciplined more and more. I had a real eye opening experience last week. I made a post about it here:
Well, since this happened I texted the person, who identifies as a libertarian and touches all the bases for someone who would be a likely SN user. I tried to get him to look into SN, bitcoin, and nostr, and he was polite but not interested. I'm chalking it up to his age. He's a senior like me. He apparently has since managed to create a new Facebook account with an alias. He dismissed bitcoin as kind of crazy, and nostr as way too difficult to figure out.
reply
It'll have to start with a few posts that really grab his attention, imo. Maybe one of the deeper dives into libertarian theory or how bitcoin is a freedom enhancing money.
SN isn't that hard to use unless you want to attach wallets. I'm willing to seed new users with cowboy credits if they're vouched for by someone I trust

seed new users with cowboy credits
How many CCs are you gonna giveaway to these new users?
This happens with me everyday.
As you know I live in a joint family, we're 29 people, including 12 kids, living together (in the side by side houses). I've talked to everyone in the family about Bitcoin and SN but none of them has shown as much interest as I do. They all have facebook, instagram, whatsapp and a fair amount of Fiat, I have started to believe that they all are too lazy and too stupid. To my peers I call before their faces that you all are slaves to your non progressive mentality.

There's a middle ground, though.
I think Stacker News can be effectively marketed to the bitcoin curious. We don't need or want to restrict ourselves to bitcoin natives.
Personally, SN was a great place to become accustomed to using bitcoin, while learning more about it. Unfortunately, without the SN custodial wallets, that first step is much more daunting.
reply
Yes, it is. But we can't do anything about it. So need to find some other ways. I see there's already a lot of discussion on how to promote SN but I didn't find something very substantial or maybe we (the old and regular stackers) aren't just trying enough to promote SN among the nocoiners.
The one way that I could attract some was telling them that 'SN can be a place where you learn and earn Bitcoin' but the 'earn' part of it seems now that it was against (or isn't there in) SN business model.
Aside note (my informal rant maybe)
I don't know what's wrong in it. Every social media promises to creators that they can earn a share of their revenue. Why can't SN attract new people with the same theme? I've heard SN Core team say that SN is not primarily a site that should be seen as earning opportunity. Why not? What's wrong in that?
reply
I have two answers to that, but I also don't think there's anything wrong with trying to earn sats here.
- Reasonable expectations: The earning potential at SN is fairly limited. If I really applied myself, I don't think I could even net 20k sats regularly. That's going to be a disappointing ceiling for most people.
- It's not what the incentives are designed for. What the rewards and fees are designed for is a higher quality social media experience. That's not incompatible with earning from posting, but it's not optimized for that either.

can? maybe
should? read Catch-22 fewer than I dunno seven times per life-language, and then my friend you got-a share.
ultimately it stinks of quick and we can't all get rich and live free in pursuit of screen real-estate that isn't owned by microsoft. SN's humbler vision as a cafeteria where you can show up broke and leave hungry with tomorrow's lunch money is more honest than "get paid for warming up the tubes"
