Well, crap. Seeing as festivals and other big outdoor events are places I'm a lot more likely to drink beer, this explains a lot.

Yes indeed. I can confirm from my own experience as a real beer drinker. I drink quite a lot of beer and also working at my citadel in nature where more flies are usually flying around (especially when some cows are around).
This summer I made a test:
- me drinking 6-8 beers per day
- another friend drinking 0 or max 2 beers.
Indeed more flies were coming on me than him. I think this is because when you are drinking beer, you are also exhaling more CO2 and salts through your skin so that will attract flies.

Glad to see science in action! Though I do feel bad for your friend having to go with little or no beers.
