There is a popular narrative that big blockbuster movies are in decline. The main logic here is that people stay more at home watching Netflix and Tiktok instead of going to the theatre. And the money does certainly look that way. Not only hasn't box office revenue not recovered to 2019, it also isn't even obviously on the rise anymore. Even before adjusting for inflation
On the other hand there are so many good movies from this decade:
  • Dune and Dune Part Two where the biggest blockbusters I can remember since before the dark ages of the superhero years, at least in subjective feeling of grandeur.
  • Barbie & Oppenheimer was a phenomenon.
  • We also have a golden age of artsy films like Kinds of Kindness, Poor Things, Everything everywhere...
  • All the old guard of directors is still active. Nolan making the Odyssey on IMAX next year, Scorsese is still here, James Cameron makes these Avatar movies that nobody wants but push the boundaries of technology, Tim Burton made a second Beetlejuice, Spielberg is still doing something I guess (Twisters 2 sucked), Tarantino struggels but still wants to make his last movie...
  • Movies seem to be getting bigger than ever. IMAX is massively coming.
I can't square these two facts: 1. Moneywise the movie industry is in a depression, subjectively we're in a golden age after the superhero dark ages. What gives? Are movies declining like Operas where back in the day to make room for Tiktok?
Movies golden age 📈20.0%
Movies in decline 📉80.0%

In the last 5 years I’ve been to the theater once and that was to see Top Gun Maverick. There’s nothing compelling for me anymore and it makes me sad. I really enjoy going to watch a movie in the theater. At home it is just too easy to be distracted by everything around me. Going to the theater was a way to carve out time and shutout the world around me.

My last time was Avatar at IMAX. Maybe 2009 or early 2010.
Other that that it's been torrents and streaming services. But not much lately, as I'm more interested in videos and books.

I feel the opposite. For over a decade there was nothing but superhero slop in the cinemas. So I almost never went. Now there are actually good movies again and I go somewhat regularly again.

I was never into the superhero movies. In the 5 years prior to covid I went to see at least 14 movies in theaters.
Edit: and there were several more I wanted to go see but couldn’t get anyone else to watch with me.

Last time we've been to a cinema my wife said that our plasma TV at home had a larger angular size. Plus we like pausing our torrented movies to watch later. That cinema has been permanently closed since Covid. So yes, definitely in decline.

The miniseries is putting pressure on movies. Streaming platforms seem to be opting for the high-budget multipart series rather than traditional movie (I imagine the miniseries fits their revenue model much better). Even if many of these are not very good, it seems to have robbed movies of some of their energy.
Also, movie releases feel like they are dominated by sequels and remakes. Few people are willing to risk new things in that realm. This may also be true of miniseries...but less so, I think.

TBH, no one will miss it, watching a movie with 100 strangers in the dark lost its appeal in my book... not to mention psychos yelling fire or worse... I prefer home theatre with pause, rewind and subtitles (if they mumble lol), my choice of food and time to watch it... Also the p-ring from hollywood didn't really produce anything lately worth watching. Netflix, Apple TV and even Prime cut into this making home watching more appealing. I won't miss it, how bout you?
