As I dropped down the bitcoin rabbit hole I wanted to run my own node, but I was a little intimidated by the technology. I got started and quickly discovered that problems would come up which forced me to use the command line as the easiest path to a solution. I needed to ssh through my windows 11 laptop, and I plodded through, copying and pasting code.
I gradually became more interested in mastering linux (and maybe even learning a little python) since I am semi retired and looking to exercise my old brain.
I have toyed with Linux for years, and loaded Ubuntu on an old laptop maybe 8 years ago. I enjoyed it, but eventually got tired of finding drivers for devices and trying to find solutions for "problems" that didn't exist in windows, so I eventually returned to the evil Microsoft.
Now I'm back, and I must say a lot has changed. I'm running Ubuntu 22.10 (I know real Linux users hate Ubuntu, but it's where I'm starting), and the transition has been seamless. I find myself using my windows machine much less.
I am using the terminal frequently, since my objective is to learn. I was exposed to a little python and docker during my trial and error struggles with my lightning node, but now I'm taking it more seriously.
There are so many free courses and material on the web that a motivated young person could probably skip any formal education entirely.
I am really enjoying the Harvard CS50 introduction to computer science class. I am also viewing online classes regarding hardware and python programming.
It really has been a fun journey so far, though I'm just getting started. I'm curious to know whether most people on SN are using Linux, and whether bitcoin was the inspiration.
