It's a lot like how it sounds. @bitcoinplebdev did the overwhelming majority of the work on this, so I'm forwarding all the sats to him.
This post itself is a 10k sat bounty. I'll pay the bounty to the most thoughtful comment this post receives after about a day.

details

It's a new post type (click 'more' on the post page) that allows you to specify an amount you're willing to pay out as a bounty. Bounty posts will have a bounty bag next to the title - grey if they haven't paid out yet and green if they have (thanks to @ToshiMoto for the design work on the bag).
Our goal was to make it an extremely permissive feature and avoid overprescribing how to use it:
  • The OP of the bounty can reward any child comment the bounty, including nested comments, and multiple comments
  • The OP can pay a bounty on a comment with a click of a button (which behind the scenes is just a tip)
  • The earning comment(s) for a bounty get a green bounty bag in their header
  • The OP's past bounties will be displayed below their bounty posts so you can tell if they have a history of paying their bounties
You can view all bounties on the recent page by selecting the 'bounties' filter.

unannounced stuff

  • We fixed a CORS issue for nostr web clients trying to pay to lightning addresses. Thanks to @dk for reporting
  • Another youtube dupe link detection fix. Thanks to @cointastical for reporting.
10,000 sats paid
k00b's bounties
LFG!

S/O to @k00b for helping me plan this out and put it together!
My original idea for bounties was a bit more regulated and complex (escrowing bounties, requiring community engagement to determine the winner of the bounty, etc) but we whittled it down to being simple, open, and permissionless.

Still there’s some game theory to figure out and some vulnerability to sybil attacks with this first implementation so I would love to hear people’s thoughts on how to mitigate that in the future without being too heavy handed.
reply
@k00b, I'm a bit surprised that the implementation doesn't have more incentives for the OP who offers the bounty to follow through and pay once someone has helped.
As I was reading the post, I was expecting at some point that you would describe that the bounty money goes to some escrow, or basically is taken away from the OPs balance, and OP can't get it back. That way, OP is motivated to actually give it away to a good child comment.
The only drawback I see to this is that, if OP asks for something and no one delivers, the OP would have to part way from his sats without getting his request fulfilled. The only option that comes to mind to counter this would look like this: instead of have the entire bounty be taken away from OP forever, make a part of it refundable. This basically enables a gradient in the trade-off between the two extreme options (fully escrowed bounty vs no escrow at all).
reply
Point taken and well put. We considered it.
IME letting user behavior emerge (within a minimal set of nudges) then tailoring the product to real world use over time is better than making assumptions.
I strongly doubt this is bounties in its final form.
reply
Wow, I feel like a superstar getting the first bounty ever on stacker news. Thanks @k00b!
reply
love this philosophy! congrats on the launch! 💪 💪
reply
Yeah, I can see how your style is to keep things rather open. Anyways, I'm sure it will end up working, you guys are doing s great job with the site in general. Kudos.
reply
Just thank you for these grandiose further developments to a more than incredible example of how a community platform promotes good virtues.
reply
This is a killer feature!! Nice work, guys. I can see this being used in a lot of different ways, e.g.
  • Jobs: digital/knowledge work (programming, design, writing, podcast editing)
  • Hiring: sourcing the right candidate for a position
  • Specific knowledge: finding answers to specific legal or technical questions
  • Activations: getting multiple people to take some action concurrently (e.g. checking in at a physical location)
Personally, I'm interested in using this for a website re-design and helping portfolio companies find the right hires

124 sats \ 1 reply \ @dk 27 Jan 2023
given our recent obsession around search, it makes me wonder if there’s a search/research feature hidden in plain sight here: e.g. “i’ll give 1000 sats to someone who recommends the best sushi restaurant in SF”
reply
Sounds like something we should test!
reply
Super awesome. You can call this feature “Stacker Overflow”.
reply
Sats overflow is another great name IMO
reply
Man. I don’t even know what to say other than; Good fucking job.
reply
All the work you and everyone else has done and is still doing on this platform is by far the most impressive of any content delivering/news feed platform. I do wish though, you would do something about the amount of misinformation and flat out lies I see being spewed on here on a daily basis. Fortunately, I am smart enough to do my own research when needed and can determine what is factual and what is not. Unfortunately, a good amount of individuals just believe the lies and misinformation without digging deeper. That's the main issue the United States faces today.
reply
Do you have any specific examples of misinfo? What do you think should be done about it?
reply
Hmm well, this is the best method for discussion about facts and arguments and counter arguments I've ever seen. It relies heavily on moderation and its format isn't quite the same as SN though.
reply
This is a great way for the OP to ask a question and reward the best answers. Could also be great to post tasks, for example, first 100 people to retweet this tweet (link) and then post your retweet link in the comments gets XX sats etc. Away for the OP to boost their social media posts. Im sure there will be tons of other things that this can be useful for!
reply
Brilliant.
I very much like how SN is prioritising quality over quantity, signal over noise.
reply
Oh this is cool– Incentives now point to quality of comments, not just content. This is the incentive dynamic that gives StackOverflow immense value via their reputation system.
Great job for spotting than, and great job on shipping it. Looking forward to seeing how this changes dynamics!
reply
This is amazing! Looking forward to posting my first bounty.
reply
Tip of the hat to all who worked on this feature. Thank you.
reply
Really cool stuff! I don't want the bounty of this post.
reply
Who says I was going to give it to you?! (So far you're in the lead though because no one else has answered.)
reply
I was about to make a post with a bounty. To write some kind of trick question, for people that read my bitcoin guides. And if they give the right answer (mentioned in one of my guides) will get the bounty.
Fun educational game.

I did a similar thing earlier this year, combining LNbits newly released Cashu and locked cryptpad.fr documents :)
Hiding Cashu tokens in a password document like this with: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/zLGCTp2z+NOxBXQSoolHjG+GA5BCgkQyqHpe6lWBe0c/p/
Password hint: This website, hm....
And those who first & correctly reply to your quiz can redeem their sats in your own cashu-mint bank, like this one: https://legend.lnbits.com/cashu/mint/NhEdb2uToFxV5UTRY3oysQ
What you can do with the lightning network is really cool, this above even works if the user doesn't have their own LN-wallet :)
reply
That's a cool idea
reply
Sick feature! In the future, will be so cool when plebs can earn enough to work from home just from their contributions to SN. Great job @k00b, @bitcoinplebdev, @ToshiMoto on continually increasing the value for SN users! Can't wait to start using bounties 💰
reply
Love the bounties!
reply
Great idea! This will make it much easier to reward thoughtful comments and engagement on posts. It's exciting to see new features like this being added to the platform. Thanks to @bitcoinplebdev and @ToshiMoto for their hard work in making this happen!
reply
I would say this is a really nice addition to SN. I can see some good use cases for it.
good job
reply
hmm, will be interesting to see what effect this has on the site overall.
reply
I'll probably work on site speed the rest of the week. Site has been kind of laggy for me lately.
reply
Was super slow this morning (even got my first rabbit hole 404), but now back to normal for me.
reply
Yeah the site was 500’ing for awhile. Man that sucked
reply
haha yeah I figured you had your hands full today
reply
I think this feature is also slowing things down quite a bit given some hairy queries we make for it. Going to see if I can improve their performance or just denormalize them.
reply
Congrats, guys! I know how hard yall have been working on this. 🤘 Would be cool for everyone to hear the back story on how @bitcoinplebdev started contributing to SN.
Also nice bag design @ToshiMoto
reply
Prices go up, prices go down the volatility is here and sometimes you might feel like a clown, but do not worry stay your ground, Sats will stay the same amount. Anywhere you go , anywhere you are... 21 millions, forever.
reply
Hey @k00b, does one split a bounty payment in a particular ratio? I have this bounty #660839 to be paid in the ratio of 1000:500:250, but each comment on the post indicates a 1750 sats to be paid.
reply
You can zap them those amounts. Press and hold the bolt.
reply
Where is the bounties filter?
reply
In recent - top right
reply
awesome
reply
Very cool, i'm sure we'll see a bunch of interesting ways plebs will use this now go forth and bounty up yall
