“Non custodial” is a psyop. It uses the negative “non” to sound bad. It makes it sound like custodial is the norm and this is the bad version of it.
It’s meant to scare you off — that’s why legislation in EU loves to use this phrasing.
Do not use non-custodial as a phase. It is a tool of the state to discourage you to from holding your own coins and taking control (away from them) of your money.
Exactly the point of legal government language- to say that unless “your” bitcoin is held by trusted safe and effective banks, it isn’t owned by anyone and can be seized.
CURRENT TERMINOLOGY - BAD
Custodial - somebody else has custody of your wallet. "Not your keys, not your coins".
Non-Custodial - you have custody of your own wallet, i.e. self-custody
IMPROVED TERMINOLOGY - GOOD
Self Custody - you have custody of your bitcoin yourself
Delegated Custody - you have delegated custody of your bitcoin to someone else
The only problem..."delegated" has 4 syllables. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue.
my language, my rules, my business, thru definitions based in natural sounds;
News-Speak traps the mind into producing random or wrong sounds with unclear consequences;
There’s a difference between self custodial and non custodial. Self custodial is only I can spend my funds, non custodial being no one else can spend my funds.
