Hell, It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was the reason, lol.. First time I've ever heard of this actually, which is kinda surprising to me that I never read about this.
It's a theory. Interestingly, Seymour Hersh pushed this theory. The same guy who revealed the US responsibility for the nordstream pipeline explosion. He's had a long career as an investigative journalist dating back to Vietnam.

Why? To protect the Dollar? What other reason would there be? We have oil here. We don't need Iraqi oil if we just drill here. What about all our prescriptions drugs? We are going to fight Iraq for this and then have to deal with china? Who atm controls all our Medicine. We need to get all that back here before we do anything against china. We need to drill here too. Every Eskimo in Alaska could be well off and out of poverty if the American Government would let them drill for oil up there.
