I use Stacker News to learn about and discuss bitcoin. The sats I might receive are nice, and I look at it as a sign that others on the site found my input at least somewhat interesting, but I don't see it as a source of income. I realize that is not the case for everyone. As a U.S. citizen living in a fiat dollar world, I value those sats, but the buying power is limited. I have recently noticed an increase in accounts that are clearly here with the intent to earn sats. I don't see this as a negative. People from countries whose currencies have been decimated by the fed's "tightening" might find this site as an opportunity. Those sats go a lot further in Nigeria than they do in New York. I have noticed that there are separate accounts that have suspiciously similar content, which could mean one ambitious person is looking to double and triple his or her sat income. That's fine by me. I believe in a free market. I have been directly asked outright for money in a classic scam scenario, but that was an isolated incident. Caveat Emptor. I know that earning income on Stacker News was one of the site's goals when it started, and I think it is starting to happen. That's good news.
Maybe you do not remember the first Bitcoin faucet... giving away almost 1BTC/user. And still those days many people laugh about it.
Who is laughing now?

It gave away 5 BTC per person at first. Wish I understood how to save my private key back then.

Very good point. It's hard to imagine for someone who didn't live through it I guess.

Use wisely your sats. Yes, tipping on SN is a good use case for your sats.
Who wants my sats should make a big effort to show me they really deserve them. Posting shitcoinery will get only flags. Posting good and interesting things about Bitcoin only, will get my sats.

Every Sat is sacred!.

Excellent! MP kept me sane(sort of) through high school.

  1. All payments are voluntary.
  2. You only get paid by providing value.
  3. In the long run, creating multiple accounts is only a waste of time, it's a very bad strategy for multiplying your income
  4. Bad actors will quickly get ostracized.
reply
I hope your list gets spread far and wide. A few accounts on here need to take it to heart.

There are plenty of valid reasons to have multiple accounts, but earning more sats is not one of them. 🙂

agree, it’s great to see an economy forming here!

I would imagine a large portion of the sats on SN once it comes in from users or jobs for example get "wash traded" lol for lack of a better term, in building signal on certain posts, which is great that the sats are flowing to the best content creators or curators and if some of that moves like you say to places that need it, thats how I think it should work
today I might not need these sats so I save them and give a few away, but tomorrow might be a different story, that's the wonder of savings and being able to save, and maybe people come into earn now but if we get them into a mentality of saving I say thats a win

thanks for the comment. I am a fan as well. it is as someone says like a flea market, you find everything at cheap prices. Unfortunately I have found one classic human weakness applies here on stacker news, as it does in the fiat world. Namely: post stuff that just confirms people's beliefs and they will tip you. People like having their opinion validated. so basically that is the same thing as on can or Fox News. if I post pro-ln, btc stuff, I get tipped, if I post inflammatory stuff, I get a lot of reaction and possibly tips too. And if I post something more thoughtful and maybe critical of btc, I get less tips. Am I the only the one with that experience?

Your response takes things in a different direction than what I was thinking about when I made the initial post, but it brings up a broader issue which I think goes to the essence of Stacker News. I have noticed what you describe, which just seems to reflect human nature. We love to be validated in our opinions. Last night I listened to @k00b's interview on the Closing the Loop podcast. He describes working on the incentive structure of the SN payment method. He wanted the site to weed out the crap and assure that the best stuff got rewarded without human curation. It sounds as if he is continuously thinking about this, and tinkering with the method. He's obviously a very bright guy who has given this a lot of thought, so this may evolve and improve over time.

They are earning sats for their contributions. People won't pay them if they don't find any value. For me personally it is a great way to find good content, and I find sats as a good spam prevention mechanism.

There are other ways of making free sats, but even if someone is here on SN only to make some income, you still have to be helpful, sharing and caring, or contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way (that includes memes and divergent positions).

We always be stackin’

Stacker news is very young though... imagine SN in 2030 when there are millions more users on here. I think stacker will be a pretty good source for extra income sats creators are getting; plus from other sources.
