One of the main reasons I became a bitcoiner is my kids. It's an open, better, fairer monetary system where no one can put their hand on the scale in terms of money supply.
I need to look into this more but I think that by doing that I lose all of the independence that bitcoin promises. I think bitcoin has greater value in an alternative store of value rather than an investment product.
@SimpleStacker it's informative because it show's he is indeed missing the premise, and that's because Bitcoiners propaganda network is burying the lead. Too much virtue signaling, not enough practicality.
It's independence from the Fed governors and the management decisions of publicly listed megacorps. It's neutral equity. Independence from elastic supply of rental properties and commodities.
He's on the sidelines because he hasn't internalized the profundity ∞/21M, that's the material premise.
Decentralization/censorship resistance only matter because they turn the sanctity of 21M into a Mexican standoff. They are but a means to this far more important end.
As a fellow outsider at one point, the hardest part is separating bitcoin from the endless crypto noise. SN is actually better than most places for that.
as I see it, the USG won’t stop deficit spending and therefore has to utilize inflation to solve the national debt crisis, and therefore tools like the 30yr fixed mortgage, allow you to utilize the same concept to grow your assets. I don’t have enough assets to where I’m i need of greater leverage at this point.
I don’t have a current wallet. without utilizing a guide I wouldn’t have any idea how to set one up again and don’t have the time or space to really explore bitcoin like I’d want.
What does bitcoin, and particularly Bitcoiners, look like from where you sit? Lunatics or geniuses, hip technobros or revolutionaries or just plain old snakeoil salesmen?
as I said I bought a small amount just to try it out a few years ago some of the main reasons that held me back from pursuing more was the volatility and difficulty of use.
when I want to invest in a stock or mutual fund using something like vanguard or another brokerage the process is simple and fast. I never felt like bitcoin was that simple and getting into it the barrier to entry seemed large.
I’ve heard the term but had to look up the definition. As I understand it that might solve the volatility concerns. But at the cost of being slaved to the value of something like the US dollar and therefor vulnerable to inflation
yeah that is definitely a concern. I’ve tried a small amount of bitcoin I held briefly a few years back and my biggest concern was making sure I didn’t fat finger something and screw it up. but honestly I’ve had similar concerns conducting wire transfers as well.
I’ve spent a few years on combat zones and it always causes me to ask myself how I would get out if the combat zone was in my home country if that happened moving everything I had into something like bitcoin would be come a necessity. so having some already there would probably be prudent and as the risk level got higher readjust the position.
Thanks for everything. Have to head out.
What's the worst thing that's happen to you financially?
the 30yr mortgage failed me on my first house and after owning for about 7 years I walked away barely above break even.
What’s your take on this meme?
I guess it means to mean that bitcoin takes the control away from centralized banks and puts it into the hands of the users
The key word is permissionless
nice.
How many kiddos do you have?
enough that a minivan doesn’t cut it
You must be busy.
One of the main reasons I became a bitcoiner is my kids. It's an open, better, fairer monetary system where no one can put their hand on the scale in terms of money supply.
how have you taught your kids about it?
for me the Tuttle twins books on the fed was where I started.
Yes. My kids also like the tuttle twins.
appropriate!
How are you saving for retirement? What's your biggest frustration when doing so?
currently I save for retirement via a rental property, Roth IRA and pension via USG
Have you considered a Bitcoin ETF for your IRA?
Would framing it as equity instead of money have made you more likely to have a position by now?
I need to look into this more but I think that by doing that I lose all of the independence that bitcoin promises. I think bitcoin has greater value in an alternative store of value rather than an investment product.
you got the basic premise of bitcoin right.
It's a very informative reply, thanks @Acrylater

I can see that. first time on here but won’t be my last!
What is your favorite financial product? Could be anything - bank, stock, app, index fund, etc.
probably the 30 fixed mortgage.
30year

okay, we are based then. :)
Why do you identify as a 'normie'? What makes you a normie?
I don’t have a current wallet. without utilizing a guide I wouldn’t have any idea how to set one up again and don’t have the time or space to really explore bitcoin like I’d want.
in my friend circle the number of bitcoiners is probably counted on one hand.
so single digit percent wise which puts myself and the rest as “normies”
If you’re alive, you’ve got time to learn about Bitcoin.
Right now, nothing is more important than knowing: what Bitcoin is, how it works, and what it’s used for.
What does bitcoin, and particularly Bitcoiners, look like from where you sit? Lunatics or geniuses, hip technobros or revolutionaries or just plain old snakeoil salesmen?
reminds me of the original Boston tea party folks.
real sexy. Most of them died/hung, right?
On the list of things that you feel could be a threat, where does financial censorship rank?
By financial censorship I mean a bank debanking you or a government deciding that it doesn't like the kind of transactions you make.
I’d rate this as a very high threat and a major reason to get over the barriers to entry.
Where do you spend most of your time online?
Google scholar
I’m a bio engineer so most of my time is spent reading research articles.
Have you ever considered buying bitcoin? If so what stopped you? If not, what held you back?
as I said I bought a small amount just to try it out a few years ago some of the main reasons that held me back from pursuing more was the volatility and difficulty of use.
when I want to invest in a stock or mutual fund using something like vanguard or another brokerage the process is simple and fast. I never felt like bitcoin was that simple and getting into it the barrier to entry seemed large.
The unfamiliarity and learning curve definitely seem to be a barrier for most people.
When you bought that small amount, what exchange did you use?
What is your opinion of stablecoins?
I’ve heard the term but had to look up the definition. As I understand it that might solve the volatility concerns. But at the cost of being slaved to the value of something like the US dollar and therefor vulnerable to inflation
bitcoin self custody is defined by a person being solely responsible for their bitcoin - not your keys, not your coins.
How do you feel about the idea of having your life savings in a place where no one else can help you if you screw up?
yeah that is definitely a concern. I’ve tried a small amount of bitcoin I held briefly a few years back and my biggest concern was making sure I didn’t fat finger something and screw it up. but honestly I’ve had similar concerns conducting wire transfers as well.
but I’d also say I trust myself more than anyone else when it comes to securing my assets
Listen to prodigy instead
What convinced you to do this AMA?
a member of the community reached out to me. and asked me to do it.
What's your best guess for how bitcoin might fail?
What's your least favorite thing about the 30 year fixed mortgage?
the hassle of having a renter. if it wasn’t for my job I’d still live in it.
How open are you to the idea that the entire financial system, and money, might be broken?
very open to it.
welcome.
what prevents you from moving forward in bitcoin?
Please stop being a normie.
If you can point to a single reason, what's kept you from buying bitcoin?
combination of limited extra resources and currently the risk calculation isn’t there for me yet, but I can see a world where that changes.
Do you know anyone – family or friends – that owns Bitcoin or has some interest or awareness?
yes I have several coworkers and family who have bitcoin.
What scenario can you imagine that would cause you to plow all your savings into bitcoin?
I’ve spent a few years on combat zones and it always causes me to ask myself how I would get out if the combat zone was in my home country if that happened moving everything I had into something like bitcoin would be come a necessity. so having some already there would probably be prudent and as the risk level got higher readjust the position.
How often do you encounter bitcoin in your daily life?
whenever I check on the stock market i see the price but outside of that functionally pretty rarely.
What's your favourite food and favourite drink?
We're all Bitcoiners here but we have so many other common things to discuss here under specific territories like ~food_and_drinks, ~Stacker_Sports ~DIY ~science
I’m stoopid too
