South Korea just laid out an ambitious national technology roadmap, with some pretty wild targets like land on the Moon by 2030, develop a 100-qubit quantum computer by 2029, commercialize brain-computer interface technology by 2035, develop next-generation small modular nuclear reactors by 2035, and strengthen domestic critical-mineral supply chains.
What caught my attention isn't just the technology. It's how clearly South Korea is defining success. The US already has major strategies covering AI, quantum computing, advanced nuclear, space, semiconductors and critical minerals. But they're spread across agencies, executive orders and individual programs. South Korea is essentially publishing a national technology scoreboard...here's what we're building, and here's when we expect to get there.
I'm not sure which approach is better. America's decentralized system may be better at letting companies, universities and markets discover technologies governments never anticipated. But there's something appealing about setting a handful of major national goals everyone can actually measure.
Would the US benefit from its own simple 10-year technology scoreboard? And what 5 national tech goals would you could choose for the US to achieve by 2036?
My list would probably start with AI, advanced nuclear, quantum computing, space infrastructure and critical minerals.
It would seem to me that some renegotiation of the social contract would be more pressing if they are interested in reverting their population trajectory.
