I made this post almost exactly one month ago:
I never gave an update. My friend and his wife began making small bitcoin purchases on cash app since our visit. They both were a little shaken by the Cold Card mess, but they hadn't gotten to the self custody stage yet anyway. They were learning on their own.
My friend suffered a catastrophic fall about two weeks ago. I'm sorry to say he passed this morning.
I have lost more than my share of friends the last few years. It's a cliche, but these losses put everything, including bitcoin, in perspective.

His number was called, his mission is over, hope he is a better place now.

Thanks. It's tough, but we're all part of a wide friend group who are now sharing almost fifty years of fond memories via texts. It's bittersweet.

It's tough. He had a long (6 year) battle with prostate cancer, but it still seems unexpected.

To absolutely no avail, my best friend suddenly died earlier this year; everything has been slightly more gray ever since. Can't marshall the energy to be excited about e.g. bitcoin anymore, you know?

Damn, I'm so sorry to hear that. Losing your best friend hit differently for me. I never lost a spouse, but I've lost a sibling and my parents. I shared hopes and dreams with my best friend that now seem pointless and silly. Time heals only because it's easier to go back to deluding yourself.
Hopes and dreams, yes. Memories of our past (and inside jokes) are worse: they, like, don't really exist anymore now that there only in my memory rather than both of ours memories

We never know if today might be our last.
Bitcoin does give us some narrow certainty while alive, but is just one of many human constructs which attempt to do this.
Before seeing your post I was looking at a website set up to remember a childhood friend who died in 2007- some of his friends set up a website and trust to remember him and his work and to support people learning and working in heritage building preservation, which was his career.
I remember his warmth, humour, kindness and friendship when we were teenagers- when life seemed to stretch out ahead of us with no end in sight.
It is humbling to realise there is an end.
The value of life is in its limited issuance, not as precise as Bitcoins, but even more precious.
We can remember and honour those we were close to in life and their achievements.

A couple of weeks ago, I lost a school friend, a young man, only about 32 years old, and these losses make us re-evaluate many things in our lives. I remember last year you also shared the loss of another friend. I'm truly sorry. I'm going to pray for you, that God will comfort your heart and the heart of your friend's wife.
