Maybe Stacker News should have a DM option. Here's some thoughts about this:
I've heard plenty of people talk about payments and email. Since lightning is already required to post on SN, it could be used in DM's. I've heard it discussed that as the site grows, possibly more than one sat would be needed to discourage spamming replies and discussions. It would be cool if each user would be able to set the rate for how many sats it would take to DM them.
If they are spammed, at least they were compensated for their time. Although I wouldn't mind my inbox getting filled with ads if it means i got a sat or two for each one, higher profile users would naturally need to set their "DM fee" at a higher rate to keep the fuction being useful for them. Their time is more scarce and the amount of people that would love to steal some of that users attention is higher.
I also have higher expectations for privacy from this site compared to facebook or gmail, which mine messages for data to more effectively advertise to you.
Micropayments may solve DM spam as effectively as it does with message board discussions on SN. It really might end up being people's preferred DM method. Thoughts?
We definitely plan on doing this. We've had a github issue open on it for a long time: https://github.com/stackernews/stacker.news/issues/56 ... My current mental list of priorities are:
  1. media uploads
  2. user profiles: profile images, tipjar, etc
  3. dms
But these are tentative. I might want to add the mailing list sub somewhere in there.

It will be a glorious and inglorious day when media can be added. When I first joined I thought it would be great to have, but now I love the content that only relies on words. Much less spammy.

FWIW my priority across those would be (top priority first):
  1. mailing list sub
  2. user profiles (at least show lightning address...)
  3. media uploads (would those cost more sats? :) )
  4. dms (I think it's good to get more users and nudge them into public posting first...)
