If consumers actually wanted phones with removable batteries, a market would naturally emerge for them. Apparently they do not, because removable batteries were quite common in the early days of smartphones but dropped away in favour of self-contained designs. I had a smartphone with a replaceable battery myself; it was hot dogshit.
Besides, this leglislation seems self-defeating if it's being done in the name of environmental friendliness. Phones with removable cases are more fragile and less waterproof. Perhaps you'd also see an influx of cheaper and weaker batteries if they can be swapped around on a whim. My impression of this bill is that it will result in more e-waste as the market is flooded with lower quality products.
i believe phones with removable batteries have a second smaller battery that ensures the phone dont lose track of time and basic settings when the larger battery is removed. so perhaps going to get more complex devices, which increases cost and carbon footprint to manufacture wink wink nudge nudge...... but its not that big of a deal
