I'm glad you said "best" rather than "greatest". I think Jordan's the best by a pretty comfortable margin.

I am curious how people approach this kind of question, though. Most probably go with something like comparing the actual contributions made by the player and how much they dominated their competition.

I think there are some fun alternative ways to answer the question, though, that are a bit more abstract:

Randomly add the player to real NBA rosters throughout history. Who improves teams the most?
Make teams composed entirely of clones of each player. Which team wins some sort of clone tournament?

I don't think Jordan's the answer to either of these scenarios. Bird's my answer to the first and Lebron's my answer to the second.

As a kid growing up in the 90s, the NBA GOAT debate was long settled in my mind. I still remember the first time seeing a Jordan highlight reel on TV and it blew my mind. Jordan and his Bulls were the reason I started watching NBA and also the reason my friends and I started playing basketball at recess, lunch, and after school. Others can argue all they want, present their case with stats and achievements and whatnot; but Michael Jordan will always be the NBA GOAT in my mind.

I will take Curry. Same amount of rings as LeBron, without moving to 3 different teams. Literally changed how basketball is played. Jordan won a lot, but his competitors were inferior to the modern NBA.

Here are mine: MLB - Yankees NFL - Cowboys NBA - Pacers (it's a Knicks thing from the 90s) NHL - Maple Leafs ( I think I get more joy watching the Leafs lose a playoff series than I will when bitcoin breaks 100K)

Wow we are symaptico other than Pacers. I don't really have an NBA team I hate but Yankees (Blue Jays fan) and Cowboys (49ers fan) are definitely my most despised franchises in MLB and NFL and as a reformed Leafs fan I absolutely love watching them lose.

I grew up a Leafs fan living in Toronto but I switched to hating them around 12 years ago. I used to go to Leafs games occassionally and the last game I went to I paid around $500 between tickets, parking, food and drink, to sit in the upper bowl and they got absolutely destroyed 5-0. We left early in the third. It was like a shitcoin rug pull and becoming a bitcoin maxi. I never cheered for the Leafs again. Was mostly indifferent for years but now that they are competitive I love to hate on them because some of my close friends are still Leafs fans.

Yeah. It's true. I do hold a grudge. A more recent grudge is Darcy Tucker. 2002 playoffs. You probably have fond memories of that guy, but I still hate him.

best mlb player of the last 50 years is miguel cabrera. 2 time al mvp, 4 time al batting champ, 12 time all star, first triple crown winner in 45 seasons, and only the 3rd player in history with 3,00 hits, 500 home runs, and a batting average above .300.

One of the best hitters for sure but I don't know about best player. No defensive or baserunning value though. Assuming we are excluding Bonds due to the steroid issue, I would probably put Trout, Griffey Jr and Puljols ahead of Cabrera. Sorry.

all things being equal i'd probably give you puljols as better overall, comparable offensive production and better defense for sure. but i'm a lifelong tigers fan, so i cannot in good conscience entertain anyone but miggy as the goat (in the last 50 years)

That's fair. I like the Tigers. I hope some of the young players work out and they can become competitive again. Central is a weak division, won't take much.

I was rooting for you @grayruby even though I kind of gave up on the MLB and NBA. I still have sporadic interest in the NHL and NFL. ALL of my teams have been in 30+ year slumps. Re your contest, I would say Derek Jeter, but I hate him and the Yankees, so no sats please.

Derek Jeter??? He is one of the most overrated players of all time in my opinion. Good hitter for average, mediocre defender and speed but had a lot of big plays in big moments so gets more hype than he deserves. Dude is a champ, I don't want to take that away from him but I don't even think he is worthy of being a hall of famer.

I forgot to add that I'm very happy to hear that Derek Jeter actually sucked. The NY hype machine kept him in my brain all these years later.

Haha he didn't suck. He just wasn't as great as the hype machine made him out to be. He is was a very good player and certainly the leader of a dominant era of Yankee baseball and seemed to have the clutch gene if that's a thing.
