Agree this is one I would like to see adjusted as well. I don't like the idea that a player runs 40 yards down the field and a bit of contact leads to a 40 yard penalty as the ball sails 10 yards past the receiver. In my opinion pass interference should be a max 15 yard penalty. They can add some sort of clear path (nba) or breakaway (nhl) rule where if the receiver is totally open 40 yards down field and the defender knows he is beat and takes the guy out instead of playing the ball to take the 15 yard penalty instead of 40 yard completion. If refs determine clear path then its a full yardage penalty but if any pass interference that occurs beyond 15 yards is a 15 yard penalty and first down and anything within 15 yards is a 10 yard penalty and first down and they can keep the 5 yard holding penalty for holding off the line.
Thoughts?
I had trouble articulating it, but you didn't. I really like your proposal. Now we need to figure out a way to make you NFL Commissioner, or at least get you on the rules committee.
