Thanks to everyone who responded yesterday and vented about the teams they hate. "I can feel your anger. It gives you focus, makes you stronger." However, in life, we shouldn't just vent about that which we dislike, we should try to make things better. On that note:
Shill me the one rule change you would like to see in any sport of your choosing that you feel would make the game better.
10 sats for all responses and more for the best ones.
Happy Sunday, GR
First reaction is NFL needs to reduce Defensive Pass Interference and stop with the idiotic roughing the passer calls. It's a violent game, everyone involved knows it. If you try to take too much out of the game it just isn't watchable.
Second, they need to bring physicality back to the NBA, too many hand check/tick tack fouls that slow down the pace of game and piss off viewers. Watching Harden shoot 30 free throws is boring. Bad Boy Pistons went out there trying to kill people every day, it's pretty soft now.
reply
Siggy and I were just talking about Pass interference calls in NFL. Let me know your thoughts on the rule change I proposed.
Totally agree regarding NBA. The other thing I would like to see change in NBA is using fouls as an advantage. Maybe a 5 second run off if you foul to stop the clock or something. Fouling shouldn't be to your benefit.
reply
100%, Pass Interference should be a 15 yard penalty. There needs to be a mechanism for egregious "open field" penalties, the risk there being that is just another subjective call made by humans, but I think it's still a better option than what it currently is in the NFL.
Hack a shaq rules and prolonging the game are frustrating in basketball. The last 2 mins taking 30+ minutes makes me so angry.
Baseballs recent rule changes have been great in my opinion, as well.
reply
Yeah, I really like the new baseball rules. Just need an automated strike zone now and maybe a revisit of mound visit rules. I don't like coaches coming out to talk strategy in the middle of the inning.
reply
To that point, take paper out of baseball! The whole game plan and stuff is typed out and each player knows positioning and strategy/positioning for each batter, it's annoying. It's less impactful now that he shift is banned, but it takes away from the athleticism and natural intuition of the players in my opinion. Scouting reports and meetings happen all the time, make the players remember vs having a cheat sheet on them at all time.
reply
Totally agree. I see players looking at Ipads after every at bat. That can't possibly be a benefit for most guys. It's hard enough to use a round bat to hit a round ball coming at you at 100mph or with ridiculous spin without thinking my hip rotation was off by 5degrees in my last at bat or I dropped my elbow 3 inches too close to my chest. They are the best in the world but they are humans, not robots.
reply
I think you all would enjoy this video about how changes in how rules are called has radically changed the NBA, without the actual rules changing very much.
reply
Agreed!
reply
I know it's for safety of the players, but the lack of kickoff returns in the NFL and NCAAF due to rule changes has really left me missing the excitement of kickoffs. I'm not sure what rule would need to change - where the kick is from, move the default starting position back to the 10 or 15 instead of 20 (or is it 25 now?), something to make kickoff returns a thing again.

reply
They should add a four point shoot to the NBA, but keep it on the wings - not a straight shot to the basket. Two zones.
reply
I would rather they just move the three-point line back a few inches, but the zones idea is interesting.
What if it wasn't the same spots every game, but rather each game the 4-point spot was randomly assigned somewhere? Have it be about 35 feet, to make sure only a few players can hit it. That could add some really interesting dynamics to NBA defensive schemes and offensive strategies.
reply
Like moving the pin each day in golf. I don't think teams will agree to a randomly assigned spot though. They will want something set in stone so they can work out strategies based on it.
reply
I also doubt they'd do a random spot, but what I don't want to see are a bunch of specialists at hitting a particular deep three. The uncertainty would make players like Steph and Dame even more nightmarish to defend than they already are. Can you imagine the panic we'd see a defense go into as Steph goes sprinting off-ball towards a 4-point spot?
reply
Yeah Curry could score 40 a game easily if there was a 4 point line.
reply
Interesting.
reply
Tough to articulate, but I really would like NFL defensive pass interference calls to be cut back drastically. I enjoy the battles.
reply
Agree this is one I would like to see adjusted as well. I don't like the idea that a player runs 40 yards down the field and a bit of contact leads to a 40 yard penalty as the ball sails 10 yards past the receiver. In my opinion pass interference should be a max 15 yard penalty. They can add some sort of clear path (nba) or breakaway (nhl) rule where if the receiver is totally open 40 yards down field and the defender knows he is beat and takes the guy out instead of playing the ball to take the 15 yard penalty instead of 40 yard completion. If refs determine clear path then its a full yardage penalty but if any pass interference that occurs beyond 15 yards is a 15 yard penalty and first down and anything within 15 yards is a 10 yard penalty and first down and they can keep the 5 yard holding penalty for holding off the line.
Thoughts?
reply
I had trouble articulating it, but you didn't. I really like your proposal. Now we need to figure out a way to make you NFL Commissioner, or at least get you on the rules committee.
reply
This is a great one. I agree.
reply
Unpopular UFC opinion but after last night's event I'd like to see extended ground control with damage not get rewarded. Last minute of Moreno Pantoja was such a buzzkill ending to a great fight.
reply
Interesting. I didn't see last night's event but I generally agree. What's the solution? Unless going for a submission stand them up after 30 seconds or so?
reply
Not sure, I think they really just need to emphasize control without damage or clear attempt at action will not be rewarded.
reply
More than any rule changes, I just want the NBA to call more of the egregious travelling, carrying, and charges that happen almost every play. The game is getting gross and it slights those who are special enough to do cool stuff within the confines of the rules, i.e. elite ball handlers and those with elite body control.
As for a real rule change, I've come around on the Elam ending for basketball games. No more overtime is a bummer, but the suspense of when that final shot is going to be made will be great.
reply
So you suggest if the game is tied at the end of regulation they just continue and say first team to 10 wins or something like that?
reply
There are different forms of Elam, but the idea is that there is no particular time when regulation ends. Instead, there will be a target score and the first team to get to it wins. The current proposal is to play the first three quarters like normal and then make the winning score be 24 more than what the leading team currently has.
Most pickup games are Elam style: play to 11 or 21, etc. The benefits are that tedious end of game fouling is disincentivized and by definition every game ends on a game winning shot.
reply
That would be quite a change. I think they do that in the All star game now, correct?
reply
They do and it briefly improved the quality of that atrocious game.

FINA should allow the "Ryan Lochte turn" in the IM event. If a swimmer can dolphin kick faster supine rather than prone or on their side, it should be allowed so long as they're in the correct position once they break the surface.
reply
Wow. I am really out of my depth on this one (pun intended). I do enjoy watching the swimming events in the Olympics but nuance regarding the rules or technique is way beyond me.
reply
Speed climbing shouldn't be a mandatory discipline for climbing in the Olympic Games.
reply
Agree. In fact, I think they should have a medal for each bouldering, lead climbing, and speed climbing, and one for overall climbing. I mean there’s 9999 medals for swimming, running, gymnastics etc, why only 1 for climbing? I guess it’s still a new Olympics event and they’re still figuring things out?
reply
I guess it’s still a new Olympics event and they’re still figuring things out?
I certainly hope so. I love watching it. It's really interesting how hands start to sweat just by watching people climb
reply
Do you climb yourself?
I’m into climbing because my daughter have been climbing since 7yr old. Minus the 1 year where all the gyms got shut down, this would be her 4th year climbing. I have turned into quite the belay slave over the years, but would get on the wall from time to time on the auto belay. Can’t wait till she turns 16 and can start belaying me. We also love to spend time on the bouldering wall, trying to figure out boulder problems.
We only do indoor gyms though and have no experience climbing outdoors. Should really get out there and try it out one day, since we live just a bit over 1hr drive from Squamish, BC, Canada.
reply
I used to go indoor climbing quite regularly for a year or two with a friend of mine when we were still studying together. We did take the top rope course together and also wanted to learn lead climbing after 1-2 years of top rope experience. We also went bouldering with more friends. That was the most fun I had in my life while doing sports and I've also noticed quite some progress over time. I also liked how you had to trust each other with your life. It's a rare bonding experience.
But then we both moved away and now I have no one to climb with anymore. I went bouldering for a few months in this new city but then the periodic lockdowns killed my habit. Very sad
Now I try to lose some weight before I try to hit the bouldering gym again. I tried it a few times already but I get very tired fast now so it's not worth to pay the entry (which also increased over time thanks to inflation). So I think with less weight I can try to get into bouldering again
reply
Damn. Didn't know there were so many climbing fans on SN. I don't really follow it but I am fascinated by it. I watched the Free Solo documentary (amazing) last year and went down a climbing rabbit hole for a few days.
reply
Alex Honnold is just built different. If you’re interested, you can check out this video where Magnus Midtbo (one of Norway’s best climber back in the day) went soloing with Honnold. You can see how casual and chill Honnold is, doing climbs or standing on small ledges, filming with one hand, casually chatting, doing all that while without a rope. The guy just has no fear…
reply
Cool. Will check it out.
reply
Climbing is awesome! It's also good mental training. Maybe that's even the best part about it.
I also think climbers have the best physique in terms of aesthetics. Very lean but still strong af
But I don't know much about other sports. So I guess I am very biased.

Fernando Alonso should win the championship, i dont like the constructors taking such a big part in the game of F1.
