Every time I log off SN I make sure to balance things out by reading John Keynes' General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money 3 times through, and then praying to my lord Jerome Powell.

Consume as much vegan food as I possibly can.

Deposit some freshly rent-seeked fiat into an index fund, pay some taxes to the federal government, and call it a day.

I just talk politics with my daughter

that's actually a great way to go about it

Ha, never seen your work until now. Keep it up.

i've seen your content, keep it up 👏👏

It's not that hard if you're so God-damned weird that nobody agrees with you on very much.

I can relate my friend. Usually I post things that would be the same as a "blank stare" in real life, with some awareness after that I'm maybe poking a bit too early. People get there in their own time.

the plight of a bitcoiner in a fiat world

reply

Man I feel this so hard. I feel like I'm in a silent chamber, I never hear my views back at me haha

reply

Discovered a new found friend in the space who wrote some fantastic thought provoking blogs on DeFI, AI, and money/state that I love to share with people:

To be honest, I love reading anything that proposes a perspective and a deep thought that's strives to be anything other than an "opinion"

reply

I read a couple, thoughtful so far on topics that I know a lot about. Thanks for the pointer.

No problem, please feel free to share with me any insightful things your side too!

I host a weekly meetup with an open door policy. I find a tremendous amount of diversity of thought within the Bitcoin community, but it tends to be divided into cliques. Social media tends to perpetuate that. I've been able to meet many different types of bitcoiners, shitcoiners, and precoiners.

reply

my local meetup will occasionally have the random shitcoin project shill come in to promote their alternative and ask the "free thinking" questions about Bitcoin.

Can be quite amusing to see who steps into bitcoiner meetups.

lol

imo we can usually hear the echos. We are generally soothed by them is problem.

While I probably suffer the effects of echo chambers as much as anyone, it helps to be mostly uncertain so that you're always willing to gather more evidence. The people I know who are most soothed by echo chambers are also the most certain. It's like they need more certainty than they deserve.

reply

The "self-soothing" aspect is the biggest thing. It's super uncomfortable trying to understand the truth about the world. You're constantly learning shit that makes you uncomfortable.

Comfort is a warning sign.

I deliberately seek out opposing opinions to mine. Not only read them but actually spend time with them and think about them.

I don't even understand how people can be convinced of their own opinion if they don't do this.

reply

these days, people would rather be in a bubble with others who think exactly like them...and anyone else who dares to think differently (even a little bit) is labeled an idiot.

how did we even get to this point?

reply

Take in things on multiple different topics, from multiple sources.

Actually, though, you could do that in bad faith and still be in an echo chamber. The real answer, I think, is that you actually want to have diverse viewpoints inform your model of reality.

If that is a true desire, it's pretty obvious how to go about achieving it. If it's not, you're just LARPing.

reply

Connecting the dots is your most powerful asset. Getting that perspective is key.

After reading Taleb's blackpaper and watching the price stagnate over the last two months, I've reached the conclusion that Bitcoin is a dead project. I've already sold my entire stack for actual money (pound sterling, the interest is really high right now, it's a great deal).

And in case anyone wonders where I've gone, I've moved over to r/buttcoin for fresh alpha.

Day 1 of snailposting everyday til BTC hits $0.

clearly heading for 0, smart move 😤

I can't find one of these echo chambers. Must be nice to try to avoid them.

reply

Break it down & ask yourself if its true. Unsure? Look into it more

Some things like climate change & vaccines require A LOT of research (bitcoin too!) so pick one that you're interested in.

reply

Follow people you disagree with...

reply

Lol. Thats funny

reply

The only real way is to meet people in real life. It's amazing the diversity of understanding. It is so easy to assume what I see on the internet is what everyone else sees, but they don't! And people who you'd think thought the same as you on everything because you have something is common usually don't. It's great. IMO, church is the easiest place to meet people from all walks of life in a voluntary setting.

reply

Reddit & Twitter

reply

oh geez. how do you manage to avoid them there lol

reply

For Reddit you add to your list of interest different things and amazingly I have a good time reading stuff that I wouldn’t find myself voluntarily. Twitter is kind of an echo chamber haha. But I always read the comments and there are people from other echo chambers.

reply

Simple (in theory)... you discuss with intelligent people that disagree with you. You have a thoughtful discussion, being aware that the differences are not personal or an attack on you/your character.

This is the way

reply

Define echo chamber

reply

If I'm going to have people around me who disagree with me they need to be people whose intellect I can respect, because otherwise they'll just irritate me.

reply

What echo chamber are you trying to avoid?

reply

all of them

the bitcoin one is cool tho
