I was on NOSTR when I came across this article by ODELL.
I've already seen people reposting from other social media on NOSTR... About me, I usually do the other way around. I try to post Nostr posts on other platforms...
And I've seen discussions here on why Nostr is "not growing" and I have a theory about Social Media platforms, let me explain furthermore... Take as an example:
  • X Formerly knew as Twitter, is not bad, IMO it was improved by Elon Musk (although the name change seems a bit ridiculous), for me it's the best place to compete against mainstream media. All I need is to type "#TheNameofaCountry" and I'll be able to know almost everything that's happening there without going to google a read a bunch of different news websites.
  • Instagram Most of my friends are there, ideal for truly personal stuff and to market my local business.
  • Facebook Dead?
  • TikTok Need to filter a lot of stuff there, but when I need some laughs, I go there... Last days some of my videos (news content) were seen by people in Africa, I suppose their mobile network there gives them some sort of free access to TikTok.
  • NOSTR Gotta admit most NOSTR users are Bitcoin and Tech nerds... At least I consider myself into this niche... I know it should be an anti censorship social media but I couldn't find a example of how NOSTR is changing the lives of people living in Cuba, China, UAE, Turkey or any country that has some level of censorship. (I know that's debatable...)
IMO, the core problem with this situation is marketing. None of us, NOSTR users, have billions of dollars to spend on marketing campaigns in order to make it something more universal.
A solution? I don't have. I'm working on video and article tutorials to be shared on mainstream social media and hopefully somehow reach more people...
What projects you know it could benefit from NOSTR?
Maybe we need to give it waaaay more time to grow organically. Bitcoiners were the start, others with other focus will follow and build up their own communities. Same with Bitcoin. I think we all need to stretch our time horizon. People will come when there is a need (and pain).
reply
Yep, I agree.
BUT, I'll use me as example... 'Till yesterday I didn't know about stacker.news... Now that I know, I can't believe I was living without it...
Got my point?
reply
Yeah. I think social life, like progress, appears accidentally.
And welcome. I hope You'll enjoy it here. To me it's therapy from Twitter et. al. Good manners and better level in general.

Thanks! 😁
Also it's easier to find high level discussions here!

Yes that's clearly the case. CU

I think as soon the user interface/experience gets better as soon we reach more people.
I'm not a dev coder but I can do a lot of things alone, like ro build a HTML website + css, build a server using free ready-code templates, build ecommerces, marketing it, build NFT ecosystem, etc, etc. Even with this little experience (in comparison wih a real dev coder) I felt like a n00b when I get to Nostr (I'm here just about 1-2 months).
So there is a lack of documentation and tutorial, but I'm sure this will happen with time.
I like to use MetaMask as an example. In the beginning, to transfer ETH from a wallet to another you had to manually put gas GWEI numbers on the following fileds: Gas Limit, Max priority Fee and Max Fee. If you put the wrong number (that is not the numbers of te market moment) you just get a fail transaction. So I remember I lost some money doing tests and learning. There was a lack of tutorial that time the same way is hapenning with Nostr today. Only researching in Reddit forums I could find some tips to fix the transactions problems + courage to not lose more money.
Now when I make a transfer on MetaMask are there more automatic decisions like: Market price, Lowwe price and Advanced (the old way). So today is easer to do transfer from their application. And you see a lot of n00b people finding a way to use it and being succeed.
I'm using ETH as an example (even knowing the code estructure is completly different) because I think the same will happen with Nostr. People will learn. More tutos will show up. Technology and user interface/experience will improve.
That's it.
Let's build! Let's feedback. Let's FG!

I'm using Amethyst... I like the UI, there's definitively some bugs that happens from time to time indeed affects UX. But I really like the job Vitor Pamplona is doing with Amethyst.
I started with with Nostr about the same time as you... 1-2 months. Since day one I really noticed it is something new with huge potential.
Since, I'm discovering a whole new level of community based on Bitcoin. (that's how I discovered stacker.news... )
reply
Yes. I like Nostr a lot. There are some bugs... but it's normal even more from a open source protocol. As I am a Linux user I'm used to deal with bugs and new stuffs.
I use more web clint I like very much Primal and Iris. Primal is working fine, but some times get bugs, whn buggy I use Iris. But I like boths progresses.
reply
I've tried Primal, I've liked the UI but I couldn't find where to login... So, I'm sticking with Snort.Social but I feel somewhat uncomfortable.
Never tried Iris, I'm going to check it out...
reply
That 's the difference. If you are using Alby to login (like me), just change the account in the Alby App in browser (I have 4 because each account is a project) then i just refresh the page. When I refresh the page I force the login. So every time I change user in Alby I only need to refresh page in Primal to force the login. It is faster than go to Setting in Iris and click "switch account".
Yesterday I got a bug in Primal that i coudan't login because Alby windows was not showing up. Then I found I clicked in "block Primal button" by mistake in one of these Alby windows Authorization ask. SO I just has to Delete Primal in Alby than reconnected it again So everything back to normal.
reply
Thanks for the tip, I already had seen Alby but never downloaded... I'll check it out.

I'm curious. What programa do you use to login to Nostr?
reply
Amethyst (Android) and Snort Social (Desktop)
Maybe a tutorial on how to avoid random porn on Nostr. It pops up all over, and it makes me much less inclined to use it.
reply
What relay are you using? I never saw porn there....
reply
Hmm...I haven't paid much attention to relays. I started with Nostr maybe 8 months ago, hung out on it for a while, then didn't touch it for months, and just started looking at it again a few weeks ago. So, I guess I'm on whatever relays I had at the beginning. And porn comes up a lot - I think it was when I was looking at "trending" on primal.net Guess I need to review my relays!

Social media hit a dead-end in terms of advancement over a decade ago (i.e. when they made social media smart phone apps). The only advancement since then has been the creation decentralized social media protocols (e.g. Secure Scuttlebutt, ActivityPub). But Nostr-as-social-media is such a minor improvement over those protocols and over centralized platforms that there's no practical reason to switch to Nostr-as-social-media.
But, Nostr can be used in other, better ways -- if only people would give up on social media.
reply
I'm curious, how could be used on better ways?
I partially disagree, at least for TikTok, I know it's not new anymore but certainly changed how the public consume content.
But certainly things seems to be slowing down overall.

If you think of Nostr as a means for computers to communicate, then the possibilities are endless. Almost every program/app that currently uses servers, could switch to using Nostr instead. And new kinds of programs/apps are possible, because Nostr is infinitely extensible.
I'm slowly working on a list of better ways to use Nostr. Notice that the first two items in the list have already been implemented.
I have more ideas in my notes. So I'm slowly adding more ideas as I search through my notes.

TikTok is a combination of YouTube and Twitter. All three of those platforms have profiles, follows, responses, and posts. What's unique about TikTok is that it only allows posts to be short videos -- similar to Twitter's prior character limit . Is there anything else that TikTok has, that Twitter and YouTube don't have?
TikTok [has] certainly changed how the public consumes content.
That is true. But it did so only by increasing the rate at which content flows out of your phone. The very short videos play endlessly; it's like a firehose of content. Does any TikTok user remember anything they watch? Can they?

nostr can be used as a decentralized and organically populated datastore with a consistent, permissionless API. That's how I've been using it for the last 7 months
reply
That's a great idea... I don't have technical skills to do that but I know how API's works. That's how versatile the protocol is...

FB is very much alive across the world. Might be dying in the US, but not the case abroad, where entire businesses depend on the FB suite of products for their online presence.
reply
True... But even here in Brazil, almost everyone are on Instagram and TikTok... A generation before mine is still on FB, mine generation is mostly on Instagram... From my generation to the newer they are all moving to TikTok.
At least is my perception here.

I'm hoping it will take the same trajectory as BTC. Small and niche in the early days but as time has progressed the decentralised and censorship proof protocol of BTC has proven to be valuable. Same with NOSTR. As more people get into BTC and naturally find NOSTR, which integrates well with BTC, we will hopefully see adoption grow. Long time preference.
reply
A natural and continuous growth. As long as it grows, I enjoy! 😁
