When was the last time you bought something with bitcoin online or in-person?
About 1 1/2 hours ago.(Dunkin Donuts gift card from the Bitcoin Company)
reply
Most of the time I see I can pay with lightning I do it because it's the most convenient way of doing it.
Also for international transfers, say you meet friends from other countries and they paid something for you, it's the easiest to transfer them sats than making international transfers.
It's basically the future, it's just that it's not mainstream yet
reply
Darkweb mostly, I also pay my Prontonmail VPN in BTC. Recently I bought mushroom spores from Fungushead.com using bitcoin
I posit that saving money in bitcoin is using bitcoin, and that on this side of monetization, saving bitcoin is the smartest way to use it. That will all change over time.
reply
Fungus, I'll have to check that out
reply
I agree that saving is the best way to use Bitcoin. However, when we pay people with Bitcoin, they get that opportunity.
reply
I spend Bitcoin every day
This week, around San Salvador
A couple of weeks ago, around Boracay
And back home, at the various merchants I have orange pilled and supported in their journey to commercial acceptance
To SPEDN is just as important as to HODL
reply
I pre-ordered a Blockstream Jade orange two weeks ago, paid with LN
reply
Yesterday. Although it was kinda cheating, bought virtual VISA card from Bitcoin Company with sats to pay for necessary ingredients to make some Bitcoin merch.
reply
That I presume will be sold for SATs
Boom, circular economy lol
reply
Yes, for that merch plan is to only accept sats, no fiat.
reply
Why spend bitcoin when I can spend fiat instead
reply
One school of thought is for Bitcoin to succeed there need to be a circular economy of Bitcoin.
reply
Succeed in what way?
reply
Adoption. Pay for everyday things, use it as a currency.
reply
I'm not interested in that kind of adoption. It's not its time and there is no need to force it. Let Bitcoin unfold naturally.
Adoption will come as needed, starting from what is needed the most:
  • store of value (take inflation rights away from the state)
  • payments for illegal goods and services
  • privacy, i.e. payments for things that are not outright illegal, but you don't want the thugs of the state to know
  • payments to avoid theft, a.k.a. taxation in statespeak
Every stage will make the state weaker and the individual stronger. At stage k, the state will have been made weak enough to make stage k+1 viable.
reply
there are so many boneheads in this thread, yikes.
reply
This is the worst type of "bitcoiner"...
Literally fuck you. Use your noggin please
reply
Turn down the toxicity
reply
Bitcoin was literally made to be P2P currency
reply
It is p2p even if you spend less.
reply
The Bitcoin network won't survive if no one uses it. You morons need to stop promoting the use of fiat for everyday spending and Bitcoin for saving.
You're all fiat maximalists with this thought process. Shame on you.
"but but but anon why should I be trying to actually get off the banking system and onto the Bitcoin network???? The $1000 I spend in rent could be a berjillion fiat units one day!!!"
morons.
reply
Saving it IS using it. Specifically as a store of value. The idea that you need to spend to use it is Keynesian.
reply
Yeah just like burying cash in your backyard is "using it" right?
reply
Saving money is using money, yes.
Obviously doesn't make sense with USD, but with bitcoin... That's the entire fucking point.
Our economic health needs to go back to being based on saving, not spending. We're so used to the idea that spending is the only way to keep the economy healthy and stimulated that we don't recognize how backward that is.
What do we say about the principles of sound money around here? It needs to be salable across time and space. Well, we haven't had money that's salable across time since 1971. Now we do, and the more people that take advantage of that, the more scarce and valuable bitcoin will become.
Step 1 - remember that money is supposed to be USED as a store of value Step 2 - USE money as a store of value Step 3 - world resets to a bitcoin standard
reply
You come off like you just read the bitcoin standard for the first time three weeks ago.
Are you new to Bitcoin? I'm not sure if I should teach you why you're wrong or scold you for being wrong.
Buy it, save ,it Work for it, spend it
reply
Why don't you buy bitcoin with that extra fiat and spend it?
And by fiat you mean cards or cash?
reply
I mean if that’s the only option, I’m happy to. But if you’re taking fiat AND bitcoin, odds are you’re converting whatever amount you want to bitcoin, so it doesn’t make a difference if that happens on the front end or the back end.
What makes a difference is long term self custody. The more people that hodl and treat bitcoin like a store of value like it should be, the better.
reply
More payments in bitcoin incentivizes more merchants to offer it as payment method which in turn grows adoption, that is, more people treating bitcoin as a store of value.
There's also the privacy aspect. Unless you're into fiat games it makes no sense to pay with a card when you can pay with lightning for example.
reply
That only makes sense if offering bitcoin increases sales.
Whether or not I feel like I need privacy for a transaction just depends on the situation.
All that being said, if a coffee shop started accepted lightning, and the coffee was actually good and reasonably priced, it’d be my instant go to.
reply
reply
Just now tipped you?
reply
Just renewed my domain with bitcoin. And they've started accepting lightning, so no more on chain fees and it was incredibly fast.
reply
Yeah what was that domain service so we could support?
reply
I use hosterbox.
I also found silent.link really helpful for esims. Great service and pretty good prices.
reply
what service?
reply
Even Bitpay started accepting Lightning
reply
Hosterbox (hosting and domains)
reply
Because number go up. Also there's not many places, if any where I can spend it. And I don't have enough to spare
reply
Believe me, I understand why you may feel this way but it's a scarcity mindset.
Imagine how much bitcoin you would have if you spent your time thinking of ways to earn Bitcoin.
Do me a favor, the next time you see a small vendor or someone that's doing something that you support and they accept bitcoin, support them with bitcoin because that strengthens the Bitcoin network.
reply
Right you are friend. I do keep an eye out but no luck yet. I get what you're saying, network only succeeds with adoption and usage.
reply
I buy everything for bitcoin But after that I convert the same amount of fiat back to bitcoin
reply
Spend and replace
I love this!
reply
Taxable event
reply
This is a real issue that stops many people from using their Bitcoin because it's very complicated at tax time unless accurate records were kept.
If anyone knows a good software that I could integrate into my business that would help me with taxes come that time of year, that would be great.
Would I be able to do something like that with BTCP server?
reply
Even with accurate records it’s a pain
reply
Domino's last week or something
reply
You must spend your bitcoins at merchants that accept bitcoin payments But after that, convert fiat to bitcoin for the same amount
reply
I live in Miami and there are many vendors here that sell all sorts of things. I always offer to pay with Bitcoin first and help them download a Muun or a Phoenix wallet.
I stress the importance of backing it up so they can recover funds and how they were have the same amount of Satoshis in a few years but their purchasing power should increase as they save in bitcoin.
Then when I see them again in a few weeks or months I tip/pay them with more bitcoin and answer any questions they may have. If they seem into it then I invite them to bitcoin brunch so they can meet other Bitcoiners.
reply
A few weeks back I bought a t-shirt.
reply
Does gambling count?
reply
Yes!
I've been geoblocked from a cool site someone posted here a few days ago. I played for free and still had fun!
What site do you recommend?
reply
Holding Bitcoin (aka savings) is buying some amount of certainty. Insurance can only cover problems that can be estimated, such as car accidents and cancer. But savings covers things that cannot be estimated.
reply
I like that but you know that's not what I meant lol.
Try tipping a bartender, barber, or someone else you think could benefit from better money.
reply
When I buy Bitcoin I like to think someone else is "spending" it.
reply
Technically they are buying Fiat or whatever else they're trading for
reply
Bitcoin does not necessarily need to be spent at this stage, we are in the discovery phase and value drain from mainstream assets.
It has value even only as a store of value. But agreed less than it also being a medium of exchange.
That will come. When oil is traded for bitcoin and Amazon begins to accept it for payments. Then the less developed economies being the first to transition to it and drop their fiats.
reply
I think Amazon will be a lot more apt to accept it if you have a grassroots coalition of people all over the world that already accept it for their business and personal lives such that they demand it be offered on Amazon.
reply
Few weeks ago, bought an Amazon gift card
reply
Few minutes ago tipping some sats.
Mostly because most people income is on FIAT, I'm pretty sure that's what's making Bitcoin acceptance for everyday use somewhat difficult.
So, most of us, need to take an extra step to convert FIAT to BTC.
In the practical short term mind of an average Joe, what's the sense to buy BTC and another extra step to find some merchant that accept it?
We gotta be honest with ourselves. There are only 3 basic scenarios why we use BTC.
First, we enjoy the whole idea. (As I do)
Second, trying to hide your movements.
Third, you have an income with BTC or gotta use it for practical reasons (eg. International transfer).
That's why I believe it's very important to use your Bitcoin. This is the only way to make it accepted by more and more people.

Without the guy who paid $10,000 Bitcoin for a few pizzas then we wouldn't be here today.
That's what I tell myself when I tip 30,000 SATs to someone who doesn't truly appreciate it.
reply
Exactly!

Yerterday
reply
Does buying a hardwallet counts as "spending" bitcoin? :)
reply
Only if you used bitcoin 😉
reply
I regularly pay for VPN and subscription to streaming service via LN
reply
Like many of the other posters, I regularly spend bitcoin in zaps, tips, boosts, etc. If more of the services I use start accepting Bitcoin (or Bitcoin entrepreneurs enter those markets) then I'll gladly spend even more.
reply
Last week on the bitcoin standard and the fiat standard. I always replace but i should spend more often tbf
reply
This is great to hear.
I haven't gotten to the Fiat standard yet but I've listened to the Bitcoin standard on audiobook.
The Bitcoin standard was really a game changer for my understanding even after I thought I understood it well.

nice try FBI

There is no place to spend Bitcoin in Australia. You can not buy with Bitcoin even a coffee in Sydney. Only options are to hodl or trade. I guess that is some form of Bitcoin adoption as well. Hope other countries are more Bitcoin friendly.
