Well, NFL preseason is almost over and it is time for the real deal. Baseball is heading into the final 5 weeks of the season and soon we will have NBA and NHL returning. For now things are a bit quiet in the land of sportsball (I know that term was coined somewhat as a pejorative but I still like it).
Interest in the NFL survivor pool has surprised me. I really thought it was going to be me, Siggy and a couple other folks but we could potentially have 17 entrants. Still need a couple more buy ins to get there but we will give them time. Made me a bit curious.
What other ways do you guys interact with the world of sports, besides watching and playing? (i.e Pools, fantasy leagues, trivia, podcasts, gaming)
Sats for all.
Cheers, GR
Other pools. That's it.

Quick Question. Are we moving forward with the Satsraiser even if we don't hear from Anita?
reply
I really would like to take advantage of Stacker News' easy zapping feature. I know we can't eliminate trust here, but I really don't want everyone having to trust me to make the donation to Anita. If she knew it was coming to her SN wallet, and was ready to move the sats as they came in, that would be my ideal. I don't know if @k00b has a direct way to contact her, but if he gives her a heads up, that would be great.
I am prepared to go forward on Wednesday either way. I'll make the post and transfer the initial sats that we committed to right away through her donation page.
reply
@kr arranged the AMA with her. Perhaps he could help.
reply
That would be awesome.

Say you run the campaign as a post. It gets 500k sats worth of zaps. That would show on the post so everyone can verify how much that is. Then you make the same amount of donation to her (I see she accepts it in USD value but we can figure that out). She does offer a view receipt option but you have to be quick. I just donated 1 dollar and missed the receipt the first time but got it the second time. Then just screen grab the receipt and post on SN. (I have seen people post charts and memes so this must be feasible)
Would that work?
reply
Yes it would. I checked it out too. I still would prefer the SN wallet if it's feasible, since I would like to make this a regular thing to worthy causes.
reply
Agreed that is ideal.

I don't mind. I trust Siggy and I am sure most others do but I understand why he would feel more comfortable providing some proof.
This is good to know, because it shows she's open to a direct zap donation.
I used to do fantasy baseball but it's too much to keep up with. Setting your lineup every day. I would do it again if it was just a static lineup and you have a few guys on your bench in case of injuries but if you have to pick different guys each day based on matchups and how they are playing etc its more a pain in the ass than fun. I think that's why football is so popular with pools and fantasy. One game a week.
By the way, my buddy was at the Mets game last night. Sent me some pics from Citi Field. The exterior facade looks really nice lit up at night. He is at Arthur Ashe stadium today watching Novak practice.

Gambling apps. As for the sports themselves, I try to avoid anything other than primary source material because it contaminates my judgment. We need a decentralized p2p bitcoin platform for gambling on the Lightning Network, super fast and frictionless, just like LNMarkets, except for sports, that never touches your money, and uses DLC's or Taproot contracts (probably need a Vault BIP for these), and only serve as one of the Oracles and public ledger, or oracle explorer. And with the future tools of the LN, like L402, I want my Ai wizard to handle everything by secure chat or voice, from game updates and highlights, to bets and analysis.
"$50 on the the 49ers."
Raiders@49ers 10/15/23 12PM PST, 49ers Moneyline(-225), Spread -6.5(-110)
"Spread."
Placed. Payout $95 (360k sats). Good luck. Ticket sent to Protonmail and published to the explorer
The various offshore sites that accept bitcoin have way too much friction, require a quasi-KYC, have complete control of your money, take too long for payouts... They are middle-men ripe for disruption. With contracting, tying the platform to a DEX, and API for the Ai, we can do away with these legacy fools.

Totally agree. LN Markets style sports betting is a no brainer. I rarely bet on sports but I would do that weekly for NFL games if it was micro betting with sats.

I listen to lots of football and basketball podcasts.
I also tried to coach my daughters 3-5 year old flag football team. Emphasis on "tried".
reply
Haha that must have been wild. I only listen to team specific sports pods. If I follow the team I will listen to pods about that team. I don't listen to general sports pods.
reply
That's mostly what I do too, but I also like listening to Bill Simmons (which is ostensibly league wide analysis, but tends to be fairly Boston-centric).
Also, yes, 3-5 flag football is a glorious mess.

Does drinking and loathing count?
reply
Yes but both are bad for you so try to do in moderation my friend. Besides things are looking up for the Jets.

Dad coaching my sons team…. ie unqualified but patient and enthusiastic
reply
That's awesome. I informally assisted with my daughter's Tball this year. Coaching Tball would be a bit beyond my patience level but it was fun to help out. When she gets older I will likely coach her team if she continues with baseball or goes into softball. After I stopped playing ball when I was 18 I coached with my dad for a couple years and had a great time but I need the kids to be old enough to at least know the rules and pay attention to the game so Tball coaching isn't for me. But it was a great season.

Patience and encouragement seem to be the secret. Too many pushy parents at times who aren’t prepared to stand there quietly and let their kids learn from each other.

Good point.

Let’s be honest that these games don’t take place without volunteer coaches like yourself or your Dad. People like me and my kids benefit from your time and experience.
My friend started a female basketball team so his daughters could play (there being no other provision in their town) - the daughters have long since moved away with work but he remains coaching week-in-week-out and keeping the team going.
reply
That's awesome. Kudos to your friend.
