I've run my node for a year now, and I can't say I agree that I can run it while charging zero fees.
I've tried being the nice person, opening channels to newbies who asked for them in reddit threads, and what do I get? Thousands and thousands of satoshis lost from force closures as these newbies eventually just shut off their Raspberry Pis.
I'm not out to screw other bitcoiners but I need to protect myself.
Altruism can only get us so far.
Satoshi somehow got it right with the base layer not requiring people's kindness to make it work. Lightning needs to do the same.
I think you did a wrong approach. In order to open channels with noobs, EDUCATE them first, explain them in details how is to run a node, why they run a node, costs, exposures.
Many noobs are jumping in just to "hey I want to earn sats". That is TOTALLY wrong.
I was writing guides about nodes and LN for about 2 years now. I am still helping all umbrelians on https://community.getumbrel.com/ with all knowledge I have and guide them NOT to do wrong things.
All these new users without education are doing more damage than good to the network. You are NOT helping them if you just open a small channel with their new nodes. They have no idea what to do next and just wait for sats to come...
