Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.
Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!
We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
Random shower thought: Is it just me or Nostr zaps are few and far between these days. Feel like the zapping has really died down quite a lot.
I wonder if it’s because it’s so fragmented as far as social apps or maybe the Apple App Store take down really did a number on Nostr apps. Just an observation but it also looks entirely controlled by a handful of bitcoiners who invested a lot of money in the ecosystem.
Which is entirely justified imho. Not gonna lie but I do miss the good ole days of Nostr.
Either way I think a redefinition of a Social app on Nostr is kinda required, it would fix a lot of the problems I brought up, I look at Damus and I suspect they are trending that way. I surely can’t be the only one thinking this.
🤙I hope to write about this soon.

Working on personalized feeds ... there are nearly 700,000 relationships that differ by > 10% from our current "global" point of view.
reply
I got it to around 70k relationships that are >= 10% stronger than the global relationships which seems more accurate ... by tuning a few "hyperparameters."
It's difficult to account for weaker relationships because they could be weaker due to a lack of history or be caused by disagreement. I think that deserves specific treatment when I start adding more relationship dimensions.

Was it inevitable that Javascript becomes a mess? With different companies having to work together to not make a mess out of it while implementing it in their browser engines?
reply
I read something a while ago about how the dude created JS. Apparently he did it in one week and immediately the language was adopted, wildly. Good times of the good ole go-horse methodology. I couldn't create a language in 1000 years. But people had enough time to fix it, unfortunately it wasn't. And now this Typescript thing, another layer on top of something already messy.

Yes.

How much am I missing by using Apple Music rather than Spotify?
reply
I don't think you are missing too much anymore. Definitely can't say that Spotify is leaps and bounds ahead. Apple Music added a discovery channel recently too. With Apple Music you also get spatial audio and loseless audio included at no added cost. Spotify has been talking about loseless for years but don't think they've implemented that yet. Also, in the recent past Apple Music paid artists more per listen than Spotify.
reply
Spotify is leaps and bounds ahead, feels curated but idk really. They have discover weekly which I have been able to find really great artists on. Been using them for over a decade and it hasn’t disappointed me.
Pandora is also good too a friend of mine had this for a bit and I was able to test it. You should get Spotify so I can follow what you listen to. One of my fav things to do is look at what everyone else is listening to. 😎
reply
You’re a music judger tho 😆
reply
🎯
reply
Might depend on what you listen to? I’ve only used Spotify
reply
I mostly like to listen to good new-to-me stuff or great old stuff and I'm totally un-opinionated on genre.
I think there might be something wrong with my expectations, because I find myself searching unsuccessfully for music that makes me feel a certain way and you can't really search for that ... they don't know me or what makes me feel certain ways
reply
Just noticed the zaps in one of the nostr client https://iris.to/ is directly showing in usd.
I wonder why would they do that setting 🧐

The Real Secret is that your dreams come true by acting on them
reply
what was your "aha" moment with stacker news?
What made you realize you have the resources and capability to create that dream?
reply
My dream is to be useful to as many people as possible. SN is just the tip of that dream's spear (and it still doesn't have much of a point yet tbf). I didn't have the resources or the capability to create SN when I had this dream. After mining ore and learning to smelt and smith and building failed spear after failed spear ...
SN, itself, is a stream of aha moments. I was originally inspired to create this spear tip by @RyanTheGentry describing @paul's Sphinx Chat at an Austin BitDevs, "Aha! Bitcoin micropayments can be used to solve digital commons problems! Oh, I've been wanting a Hacker News for bitcoin! BitDevs is like a Hacker News in person and it's amazing! Hacker News is a commons!"
My dream isn't nearly satisfied. I'm pretty sure satisfying dreams is about continually acting on things that may satisfy the dream though. Thinking about the dream is part of acting on it but it's not the cause of the dream happening.

ᕦ(ò_óˇ) Day 4 of exercising everyday before the saloon opens
Today, I went up a mountain:
Ok, no, just kidding that was a few weeks ago. I still feel like I should recover from day 1 and 2, so I just went for a walk again today.
I also wanted to get out of the city so it became a trip down memory lane for me:
I used to live here in the outskirts before I felt very lonely and moved into the city.
I took a train to come here such that I can walk the 5km back home.
Pretty interesting to remember how I felt back then or what stuff I was thinking about. That was during my early days of bitcoin and COVID. And how different I feel now.
Wanted to reply with something along these lines to @k00b's post about how we changed in the last 5 years but it didn't feel worth mentioning so I just replied nothing, lol
reply
I like the idea of the saloon being used as a personal accountability thread where people share progress on their positive habits.

Soon you will just unconsciously speak in haikus.
reply
That would get old really quickly! I will likely limit myself to sharing only the relevant and worthwhile.
Allen Ginsberg said of Kerouac; “He’s the only one in the United States who knows how to write haikus… Kerouac thinks in haikus, every time he writes anything—talks that way and thinks that way. So it’s just natural for him… He’s the only master of the haiku.” So I should perhaps leave them to him.
My last one; Words come tumbling out; misquote, misspell, mistake… haikus without end

There is a lot of power in revisiting old walks and locations as it’s sometimes good to draw some strength. It can help carry us onward and upward!
reply
Yes!
I also think I should leave my phone at home so I can enjoy my mind wandering around more. But then I can't take pictures.
That also the reason why I decided to not listen to podcasts even though it was a great idea of yours. I actually wanted to enjoy the boredom.
Maybe I'll buy a camera and start with photography.
But am I not than still distracting myself by occupying myself with something predetermined?
reply
It depends what you need to get from your time out I guess.
If it’s an engage with nature, clear your head, etc. a phone or podcast may not help. If it’s purely fitness it may help having the distraction. I do sometimes carry a camera for longer walks but quite often I don’t use it unless I am specifically visiting somewhere.
