I had no idea. I was a kid. We all thought of it as a joke. Maybe our parents didn't! I remember that the Boston Bruins hockey team had four defensemen named Bob and Carol and Ted and Dallas.

I can't think of any movie in particular, but that whole thing was so particular to time and place, and probably mostly a Hollywood invention. I remember a bad film called Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice that was all the rage back then.
