Finally had rewards go to poster/commenters last night.
I wonder if the problem Math.random() ain't so random even for a coin flip, but that seems silly.
reply
Wherever I can I use arc4random(). Much better.
reply
I was wondering… how many days in a row was it?
reply
13 days in a row
2^13 = 1 in 8k
reply
Fun fact: whatever sequence of rewards had happened would also have had a 1 in 8k likelihood.
It's our choice to attach significance to it.

It worked out nicely for me.

Here's something fun. My lovely wife tells me she had a dream about bitcoin. She said, I dreamed the dollar crashed. It was worthless. No one would take our dollars. We couldn't buy food. I was so glad we had bitcoin. It saved us.

This isn't a new thought but it is one I had this morning. It seems like we have two stories that could be connected happening now. One is the US ETF story. Many are excited about NGU and I think that is likely. The huge downside of the ETF is you have no control over it, you are completely trusting the custodian and the state to not rug you. Not good. The second story is the more direct fight on self custody. It is obvious that bitcoin's enemies in government are trying to pretend that they are not criminals and we are.
Here's the thought. Bitcoin's actual value is its utility. The ability to not be censored. To not have to trust third parties. To be able to move value across time and space. If you only interact with bitcoin through a trusted third party. If custody and use of bitcoin is criminalized all you have left is the approved custodians... Why would some token in your 401k have value? It wouldn't. Its a scam.
SO, what happens to the utility of bitcoin? Its still there, but why buy it if you aren't going to use it? Bitcoin isn't magic. Its not valuable because some jerk on Twitter says it is or some boomer that has billions says it is. It has value because it solves problems. Most in crypto have no clue about utility. They only see $$$$. They wanna be rich.
So, this whole ETF plus criminalization could be a decent attack on bitcoin's market price. I actually wonder though if I'm giving the clowns in DC to much credit. Are they smart and capable enough to coordinate an attack like this? I have a hard time believing this.
Finally, if I didn't understand how bitcoin works and the game theories others have described I'd be worried. I'm not though. The US is not all powerful and if they do try to hurt bitcoin other nations have an incentive to embrace it. It will be VERY hard to stop bitcoin if not impossible. One thing is for sure though. Things are gonna change in the next year or two. What do you think and how are you prepping for it?
reply
Are they smart and capable enough to coordinate an attack like this?
Short answer, no.
reply
Yeah. They aren't. They aren't sending their best. Pretty clear.

I really liked Marty’s Bent newsletter last night. Being strong and have confidence and saying the mantra of “ we are going to win” to confirm this position . This mantra many have any meaning in whatever context that is important in your life.
It’s so easy to fall into nihilism. The geriatric class of America is truly soul sucking. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking you don’t matter. Your vote how you spend your money who you decide to love or the color of your skin. But it all matters to each and every one of us.
But what Marty is reminding us is this idea of perseverance for making life worthwhile. And it all starts from within.

Hey peeps, a reminder: I've been posting prompts on the book club thread throughout the day, and have a few more before the night is through. So if nothing whet your whistle so far, check back.

Fun fact: the zaps I stacked on my new post can already pay for my lunch, thanks stackers!:)
Two superpowers I've learned in this:
  • Consistency
Everyone starts from nothing here; maybe the only thing that can tell people apart is how consistently someone shows up and how much value they are offering on the table instead of creating noise.
  • Geoarbitrage
This is one of the coolest hacks I've learned during my nomad journey - most things are priced differently between countries, so the art is finding those less popular and undervalued gems ( verifying things inside of the places instead of listening to what's on mainstream medias ). e.g. Earning sats even with these small amounts works amazing if you live in hyperinflation places.

How can I find a list of accounts I have muted? A poster who annoyed me in the past might evolve into a valuable contributor. As it is I am issuing a lifetime ban from my feed to these guys. I believe in second chances.
reply
It’s a good idea….. but you muted them for a reason and has the reason changed? 5hitcoinery and bots get a mute from me and there is rarely any coming back from that..
I’m all for earning second chances and, although you won’t see their original posts I think their contributions to discussions still show up? (just as ‘someone you muted’ and can then reveal)
reply
I guess I categorize the people I mute. Shitcoiners can realize the error of their ways. Bots are useless and not worthy of a second chance. Same with trolls saying outrageous shit. Who I'm really focusing on is the new account that starts bombarding my feed with useless link posts. I admit I mute those. In a few weeks their postings may improve as they get the feel for the site.
reply
Thanks for describing your muting criteria, I've been thinking about this since the feature was released. Given how contagious culture is, I mute rudeness, condescension, bullying, and abuse. It's the opposite of the community I want to be a part of and I have no patience for it. One Twitter is enough.
After a number of exposures, I eventually mute people whose signal-to-noise ratio is super low. If I know exactly what you're going to say, it's a waste of my attention to see the millionth version of the same thing. (This is the reason I hardly ever listen to btc podcasts anymore. Most of them have had nothing new to say since 2020.)
From time to time I reveal a "someone you muted" post, as @carlosfandango mentioned, to see if the person deserves another chance. So far, nope.
reply
I agree with you, especially regarding the toxic crap. That's one reason I've never implemented wild west mode. I guess I should experiment just to see how bad things get.

Same. I think there's a very interesting choice point ahead. If btc is literally the central construct of a community, then what do you get? Right now, the affiliation group around btc is familiar -- some Austrian econ, some anti-state / ancap stuff, assorted ranting that you can imagine being in a subreddit about the Green Bay Packers if there wasn't a btc sub to absorb it. It's pretty typical of subculture formation at this point in the process.
Here's a thought experiment: if you couldn't talk about btc AT ALL, what would be left, and how happy would you be with what was left? What's a desirable topic / ethos to unite a community that you'd want to be a part of? And who else would want to be a part of it -- you have to be careful to not define a new circle-jerk where you're the only one in the circle.
reply
Yeah, wild west mode looks fine after seeing the link @nemo sent. I of course agree about community. That's one of the best things about this joint.

Nah there's plenty of new things that have podcasts about them e.g. Ark, BitVM, BIP324. Or new discussions brought on by what's going on in the ecosystem.
I've been shouting about bitcoin since early 2013, and I still listen to a lot of bitcoin podcasts myself. This narrative that it's all repeat stuff is incorrect IMO. Yes you should filter and curate your feed, but that's always been true.
reply
I guess I should have been more specific. Podcasts with new tech topics are abundant, as you mention. Discussions abt "what's going on in the ecosystem" are I suppose literally happening -- news about whether an ETF will be approved, or the Texas grid, or how Elizabeth Warren is terrible, or whether ordinals are stupid or not, or whether Udi or Nic are bad or good. Whatever.
To me, these are all just high-frequency noise, in the same way that news about a new donut shop opening is high-frequency noise. Nothing wrong with that, some people want to know the donut situation, but on a meta level, I don't care. If it wasn't this donut shop, it would be some other one.
Back in the day there were discussions about what btc meant, what it portended for the world, what the implications would be. Your brain was constantly blowing up trying to absorb it. This was the Age of Andreas. Hard to find that now. Not sure there's a market for it, either.
