Well everyone votes with their wallet differently and businesses only support altcoins because someone is voting differently to you, they do it because it generates a return, its not like these are non-sensical people, they have bills to pay and staff salaries to deal with, telling a business to cut a revenue stream without offering an alternative is kind of pointless
If Bitcoin holders are not spending enough or focusing on bitcoin only isn't viable for them they're not going to do it, and if there is a market for bitcoin only someone else or even you could start it and exploit this under-serviced market if there is revenue to be made
reply
It's Bitcoin, which matters. That's the concern.
reply
Bitcoin is permission-less. Everybody can use it regardless of what you or any others might desire. Isn't it great? :-)

EI understand where this sentiment is coming from, but am more relaxed about it. Some altcoins may be more suitable for certain uses cases Bitcoin wasn't made for.
Bitcoin was made to store value like nothing else, but e.g. Monero is private, which makes it suitable for payments on the dark web and the like, at least for the time being, before Bitcoin gains a privacy layer.
Monero may go to zero, but it's not going to happen in 5 minutes, which is how long I need to hold it for when I swap BTC -> XMR and XMR -> the government-unapproved good or service of my choice.
I wouldn't hold it, and it wasn't made to be held.
Add a privacy layer to Bitcoin and the world will switch.
Complaining that people use shitcoins to buy illegal items is a bit like complaining people drive shitcoins (cars) or live in shitcoins (houses) instead of Bitcoin.
If one day I can drive or live in Bitcoin, I may switch :) But until then, I'm going to drive a car and live in a house, and not worry that they're shitcoins because they're not Bitcoin.
reply
Yeah XMR is basically a Bitcoin Layer 2 :)
reply
Cons:
  • it has its own token, but that's not an issue if you only hold it for a few minutes
Pros:
  • atomic swaps between BTC <-> XMR
  • more decentralized than Liquid, Cashu and Fedimint, at least as it stands
reply
Monero isn't a token, but I get what you're saying
Honestly though you can hold it much much longer than 5 minutes. Just depends. Sometimes you'll make a small gain or small loss but it ends up a wash usually. There are months where Monero will have more gains than Bitcoin. In fact, Monero made about +200% gain over Bitcoin the whole year of 2022. Check for yourself if you don't believe me.
It's only on a scale of years or longer where it really matters.

What did I say that was wrong? That you can hold Monero for more than 5 minutes without being a neurotic terrified pansy about it? Sorry that facts get you so darn upset

Coinjoins and LN are privacy garbage compared to Monero. Even LN devs are telling you this but you're still in denial.
Copecity
No, the market doesn't agree with you.
Where privacy matters most, namely on Dark Web marketplaces, Monero is accepted everywhere and BTC is being withdrawn and actively discouraged.
Price charts are inconsequential here, because we're talking about payments, not hodling.
does Zcash fall into this category too? i'm curious about privacy coins but have yet to learn much, ZEC seemed like it was promising at least once upon a time ...
reply
I see it as a worse version of Monero. But both are shitcoins.
reply
I’ve heard Monero get referenced countless times for privacy but I’m struggling to understand how it can do better than Bitcoin and Tor. What is the sauce?
reply
Monero completely hides amounts and addresses from the blockchain using encryption.
If you doubt me fact check me on that. Search "Confidential Transactions" and "Stealth Addresses". Coinjoins are weaker "privacy" via obfuscation AKA nothing is hidden all connections and possible amounts are visible and easier to unravel with offchain data or future mistakes. On top of being inferior privacy - CJing is also more expensive, slower, and tedious vs just hitting send with Monero.
And even if you don't use Tor with Monero your IP is hidden by default with Dandelion++
Just don't use Monero for savings if you think the price downtrend will continue and you'll avoid all the "inflation bug" fears Bitcoiners have of Monero and still gain all it's benefits. Use it like spending cash.
LN can be more private than Bitcoin but it isn't a serious privacy solution. Receiver privacy in particular sucks. Even unannounced "private" channels can be discovered. Don't believe me? Straight from a lightning dev: “We call private channels 'private' but they are really not, they are more like unannounced channels,” Giorgio said, adding that there are currently ways to exploit the Lightning Network that enable a node to discover an unannounced private channel." https://bitcoinmagazine.com/technical/state-of-bitcoin-lightning-network-privacy

Agree! I haven’t used bitrefill for that reason. I have found The Bitcoin Co and Fold to be sufficient for my needs.
reply
Guilty as charged! I use Bitrefill. But that’s because I haven’t heard of the Bitcoin Company until today. Will go do research on it. Thanks mate

Bad take. Freedom of choice.
reply
You are free to accept shitcoins. I will just not use your service or donate, if you accept shitcoins. Freedom of choice from my end to not support shitcoinery.
reply
Exactly.
Freedom of choice != Freedom from consequence.

Mullvad VPN is a great tool and I love that I can pay with BTC but I hate that they accept Bitcoin Cash as well... it's really cringeworthy.
reply
I did not knew that. Damn. Now their image completely changed to me, see, this is what i mean!
reply
Disagree here. Any service accepting Bitcoin helps to live on a Bitcoin standard, regardless other payment methods they are offering.
reply
It would be more preferable for businesses, organizations, services, and donation pages - to abstain from accepting Bitcoin altogether rather than mixing it with other shitcoins.
The only issue that I can see with this approach is that it could delay hyperbitcoinization.
reply
I see it as a step in the right direction, at the end of the day if just 1% of the people who have bought or accepted crypto had becomed bitcoiner even if the rest has been disgusted by it, the cycle keep advancing.
reply
This way, you make Bitcoin for merchants less attractive as money. His infrastructure for accepting shitcoins becomes less costly to Bitcoin's only part.
reply
Altcoin will exist no matter how much we don’t like them. And as long as they have non zero market value and liquidity, it’s perfectly reasonable for anyone particularly entity to accept them(most of them will convert them to fiat or BTC anyway) I don’t see this any form of betrayal.
