I sometimes zap only as a "mark viewed" tool...

Clever. I zap all my notifications for this purpose. I don't want to miss any comments. If it is zapped, I know I have read it.
You might just try setting your default zap to 1 and then randomly attacking your screen with reckless abandon.

Sometimes I give my 2 year old my phone just to zap randomly.
He loves it a bit too much!
I only use SN on my laptop and my 5 year old loves to sit on my lap and zap everything possible to see the lightning bolt.
