I watched Band Of Brothers
Wow, that was fast, did you watch the whole series in one sitting?
and was the reason the bombs were dropped
to my understanding, they wanted to force a surrender and prevent a very costly invasion of the mainland. and of course, to try out the nukes on real targets and show the world their superiority as @carlosfandango mentioned (preparing for the cold war?). getting the credit for the surrender may just have been the icing on the cake, i guess
to be honest, i can't blame them though. war is hell.
Ha! No, I'm slow. Band Of Brothers is really old. I watched it years ago, when it came out. It was released in the U.S. in 2001. Yeah, that's the story we were taught growing up. The horrible loss of life in an invasion. I dont know. I would think they could have exercised some patience. The Japanese leadership would have delayed surrender, but the remaining troops were inexperienced and with low morale. Also, the average citizen just wanted the war to end. Who knows? I feel like the bombs were a drastic, unnecessary choice.
