I have a contractor doing some work on my home and we were talking about payment options. After he rattled off a few options, I asked if he accepted Bitcoin, and he said “umm, yes! Well, let me think about it.”
This would be a sizable purchase, which got me wondering, what’s the biggest (in terms of Bitcoin) purchase you’ve ever made?

I bought my s9 with bitcoin around 6 years ago... Was ~$1500 (Was basically .2 BTC)
reply
Great answer! How many sats have you earned with the s9? Do you still run it?
reply
It probably netted me about .5 BTC running it in it's prime.
I'm currently in the process of turning it into a space heater, the last of the parts actually arrived today. Hoping the hash boards are still functional after all this time.

That's awesome! I didn't realize we already had a similar discussion on another thread lol I often don't pay attention to nyms.

It's easy to miss things, but that's part of the fun

Ye, I was really surprised they are not accepting lightning, had to make some workarounds:) but it's a shame they don't use it.
reply
Yeah, NVK is not about Lightning. I don't blame him. He's focused on what he's focused.
That's exciting, hope it arrives soon!

Great. This is the way! In terms of the biggest purchase I made... I really can't remember. From 2018 I am literally living on Bitcoin and I paid so many things with Bitcoin.

2017 I paid 0.7 btc for 80k useless tokens I eventually sold for 80k sats. That was all in, and I still can't believe I paid the sum I'll never recover

Recently, 0.25405992 (valued $9,472.37 at the time) for x5 120Th S19K Pro's.

Biggest single item purchase was buying the Embassy Pro from Start9 right at release, aka in the middle of the bear market, which costed over 8.89 million sats. Probably only need less than half of that if I were to buy it now, but at least I got a dope box hand drawn by MADEX.
Most coin spent on a single vendor, but over multiple orders is Coinkite. I have no self control when it comes to Coinkite hardware. Probably blew over 12 million sats on them over the past few years.
I need to guard my stack better and put some control on the impulse buying...

Not a purchase but I took a big loan on Hodl Hodl with my Bitcoin as collateral. I needed some fiat urgently and didn't want to sell it, so it was totally worth it.

DId he take it then?

No conclusion yet. The work is still ongoing.

Two Bitcoin miners in 2020. Dumbest purchase I ever made. The company was supposed two run these at a facility but after 7 months the place was not ready. I was given the option to use another place, get the miners physically or refund. I wanted the btc back. They made me KYC, and sent me the Fiat value of my original purchase. Because Bitcoin increased buying power I got about 60 percent of what I originally sent.
I would not recommend ever making a large purchase with Bitcoin! For me it reduced my stack and I've never recovered.
My reason originally was that I'd make up mining rewards. I was able to stack Bitcoin when everyone else sold and then I got cocky.
For small purchases I'd say yes but for large, no.... Unless the vendor would be willing to accept a discount due to the future value perceived. I've told people I would charge only 75 percent for a job if they'd pay me in Bitcoin. No one takes my offer.
Your home is a big deal so if your stack is large enough that it would not harm and the vendor would like Bitcoin then maybe it's good but then you have to be responsible if he doesn't understand custody or he gets rugged.
