The SNES was the first game console I owned. My dad bought the Super Mario World bundle for me and both him and I were instantly hooked. He continued to buy game cartridges for me, and over time, he helped me build up a modest, but fun game collection.

My favorite games from my collection were Zelda A Link to the Past, all 3 Donkey Kong Country games, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and of course, Super Mario RPG. I will not forget the first time I got to the final boss in Yoshi's Island, when in the second phase, Bowser Jr. turned fucking huge and kept advancing towards me. That felt like a real epic boss battle.

I also borrowed games from friends and would beat them before returning them to my friends. I remember having a lot of fun playing Street Fighter 2 and Raiden (the shoot'em up game). I also remember getting pissed off playing Earthworm Jim 2 and The Lion King. Whoever designed that "I can't wait to be king" Lion King level was an asshole. I forgot how many attempts I had on that level as a 10 year old kid, but I felt like I was the gaming master and that I could beat any game the moment I passes that level. Then my dad bought me Donkey Kong Country 2, and I was yet again humbled.

This is Miyoo Mini Plus. I don't think this one connects to a TV, but there are other retro handhelds like this that do have mini HDMI out.

Didn't own a SNES but my family often spent summers at my uncle's house which had one. Some of my best childhood memories were formed from playing Super Mario World on that system... to the point that I even get misty eyed thinking about it (life was not easy at that time and video games were an escape)

I've since played a lot more SNES games, mostly on emulator, but nothing captures the magic of playing on the console as a child

Super Mario Worls was so fun. I played a lot of it with my dad, who loved that game too. I remember the night we finally got to Bowser's Castle and couldn't beat Bowser after many attempts. It was already past my bedtime and we decided to try again tomorrow. My mom told me the next morning that my dad got up in the middle of the night and kept playing to try to beat Bowser, haha.

International Super Star Soccer Deluxe!

What a great game. My journey started with Super Soccer, then ISSSD, then Winning Eleven, the Pro Evolution Soccer, which sadly is now gone.

PES was great too. Especially PES 5. When playing soccer was about skills and not “luck”. Nowadays I just play Rocket League, I love having complete control of the car. True Proof of Work!

Got a SNES for Xmas from my dad, never forget it. I had super Mario all stars, which it came with. We couldn't afford many games so I used to rent Mario kart as often as I could. I remember when donkey Kong country came out I thought the graphics were insane and they'll never improve on them. I've got a switch now with Mario kart and donkey Kong and I can't believe how much harder the SNES versions are, especially Mario kart. I love how the switch has the online subscription with a huge back Catalog of SNES games. Guinea me a chance to play all the games I couldn't afford back then. Thanks for letting me relieve my childhood a bit

Super Mario All Stars was one that I borrowed from my friend. It was a great way to enjoy the original NES classics on the SNES.

I was never able to borrow Mario Kart from my friend, because it was one game that he would not loan out. But I went to his house and played many hours on it. I remember trying to master that shortcut jump in the haunted house level using the feather. Very fun game to play solo or with a friend.

The Donkey Kong Country series was one of my most beloved game series. I was also blown away by the graphics when the first Donkey Kong Country came out. But the difficulty jump from the first game to Donkey Kong Country 2 was no joke. DKC2 was hard...

The retro arcade on the Switch is awesome! Like you said, it allowed me to play titles I didn't play back then. My kids also play on it and love some of the old classics.

My brother and I ended up getting a sega genesis for Christmas one year. We both actually wanted a snes. My best friend had one. I played his snes more than I played our genesis. I was hooked on Nintendo first party titles. And most of the ones you listed. Since then l, I have owned a few snes consoles and collected games off and on. I go through waves of nostalgia. The N64 was probably a bigger deal in my house since we actually had one growing up. But snes is one of the greatest of all time.

The SNES too was a major part of my childhood. I actually skipped the N64 and Game Cube because I got into PC gaming and stopped playing console games. I got back into Nintendo console when the Wii was released. I actually went and lined up overnight outside Best Buy with my friend to get one on release day, but that is a story for another day. Bought both the Wii U and the Switch; also own a DS Lite and a 3DS XL, basically a Nintendo fanboy.

My older brother had an NES, but most of my childhood gaming was on SNES. Turtles in Time and Maximum Carnage were two of my favorites.

In college I discovered New Horizons, which holds up as a great maritime game. It's an open world Age of Adventure naval trade and exploration game. I highly recommend it to any SNES fans out there.

By New Horizons, do you mean Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons? I never got into the simulation games on the SNES, but my friend who loved sim games wouldn't shut up about it. He kept telling me to play the Uncharted Waters series, Sim City, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4. But I never gave in to his shill, my loss.

The first time I actually played an Uncharted Waters game was when I was in highschool and I played Uncharted Waters 4 on the PC. It was so fun and I finally saw why my friend from elementary school would not shut up about Uncharted Waters 2. It was also the first time I learned about arbitrage.

Yes, I always forget the Uncharted Waters part of the title for some reason. It really is one of the best games I've ever played on any system. I really don't even think of it as being in the simulation genre. It's much more of an RPG, at least in my mind. If you've ever played Mount & Blade, I think the dynamics are somewhat similar. Also, Sid Meier's Pirates was an attempt at a very similar PC update, but in my opinion it was not nearly as good.

I know the series by its Chinese name, which is written the same as the Japanese name in kanji, 大航海時代. It means the great age of sailing / sea voyage.

You are right that this genre isn't really a simulation game. I wouldn't call it an RPG either, even though you choose a character in the beginning, but you're managing your fleet with an overlord UI. I would categorize it as a turn based strategy game. I actually have played quite a few turn based strategy games, most notably the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series and the Civilizations series.

Your gameplay style sort of dictates whether it feels more like a turn-based strategy or RPG with turn based combat. I always played avoiding combat as much as possible and focusing on exploration and trade, so it felt more like an RPG.

You are right again. I kept thinking when in map / management mode, it's also turn based, but I was wrong. Only the combat was turn based. Playing in the map and entering towns/cities were all real time.

Me too. I fire up the cartridge from time to time, to relive my childhood memories. My kids also play it, although they play it on the Switch.

Yeah, played heaps.

Duck Hunt and Super Mario World of course were the classics, I also enjoyed Final Fantasy VI:

Also played the Donkey Kong games. Also Super Mario Kart was fun.

I really enjoyed playing Super Tennis, I even play these days from time to time:

Of course Super Soccer was a great game. Beating the Nintendo team was a great feeling.

I hit way too many pots with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past

Out of all of them though, I think Super Mario World was the best game overall. I still play it these days and enjoy it thoroughly. Maybe Zelda could rival it.

I thought Duck Hunt was on the NES and not SNES?

The first time getting that 96* on Super Mario World took a while, especially in an age where you could not look up gaming guides online. But the sense of accomplishment was no joke.

A Link to the Past was my introduction to the Zelda series and the game was just great, period.

Yeah, you're right, I mixed them up.

What a great game it was, completely revolutionary with the gun. It only works with the old TVs (the ones with the big back, CRTs).

When you pressed the zapper the TV would change the image to a black screen with a white rectangle where the duck was. The zapper was simply a light sensor. It would either pickup a low signal (black background) or a high signal (the bright white rectangle) and based on that it would know if you hit the bird.

That also explains why they only had 2 ducks and no more. They would add a second black frame with a white rectangle where the second duck was. If they keep adding those frame it would be too obvious and it wouldn't look nice. So that's why they only had 2.

Yep, I know exactly what you're talking about, because when I was 9 or 10, at the time, our landlord's sons had a NES with Duck Hunt and numerous other NES games. I would go to their gaming room to play with them. Indeed that dog was annoying, but at the same time, very funny. Fun times!
