What’s critically important to teach the NEXT generation?

An appreciation for the ordinary.

As the world moves closer to VR, AI, all this stuff — getting “what you want” will be a trivial endeavor. It’s become easier with the internet, but now we’ll be able to put forth whatever persona we can possibly imagine, and have it look and work exactly how we want it to.

You can have anything you want in virtual reality, and it will become all too easy to then take for granted or even despise the real world.

Obviously, that’s a dangerous mental precedent to set for anyone.

Given these issues, and a whole host of others that are bound to come: What else do we need to be focused on instilling in the next generation?

Critical Thinking.

There’s a battle for our own minds going on right now and it will likely continue/evolve with more and more services being automated. Surrounding themselves with people strong in these aspects may be one of the greatest assets for the next generation.

Agreed. IMO we're ill-equipped for the amount of information we have in front of us, and it seems to make us likely to neglect our human needs.

If in doubt, make friends and learn to trust. It's more than worth the risk, it's necessary to stay healthy. Surround yourself with people who will be honest with you, especially when you don't want to hear it. Value them for that, and return the favor.

We glorify distributed, decentralized systems. Don't forget what that looks like offline, nor its importance.

Personal responsibility. The nanny state is attrocious. And having worked in the US DoD for over a decade, I can tell you that thw nannies all blame each other too. My kids will clean up their own shit and take responsibility for their actions.

At least one teacher warned me about how statistics can be used to trick the audience. (See early COVID-19 infection stats).

The raw power of having "trustworthy" people repeat narratives ad nauseum is by itself a powerful brainwashing technique on many. Gell-Mann Amnesia strikes even some of the better minds. (Mainstream news).

Democracy is two wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

Statistical differences in various metrics exist between races, but don't prejudge individuals.

All individuals are not of equal value, but people are able to change over time and do deserve treating them well on first encounter. Excel at your interest/enterprise and pull others up as a side-effect. Being an asshole does backfire.

The world is f-d up but gets better as you become an adult. (Especially if you had to endure school).

One person selling something to another increases the wealth of both. Some call this magic capitalism, but the name doesn't matter.

Seeing everyone on a spectrum from producer to parasite may be a more accurate frame than proletariat to capitalist. (Read Ayn Rand).

The state benefits from atomizing individuals away from their families. Ostensibly optimizing to attempt saving the children in the worst family situations to the detriment of all families. (Banned homeschooling etc).

Fringe movements will attract real and/or impersonated idiots that will be used to discredit the movement. (Nazi flag in Trucker protest in Canada, flat earthers on SN).

So my word for this question is: habits.

What do you know? I’m a teacher and today is the 3rd day of the new school year. I’m tasked to teach 7th graders who are new entrants into my school. So I have been trying to begin with the end in mind and start the new school year right.

I believe that before we can inculcate noteworthy qualities like resilience and adaptability in the young, we must teach them to build good habits first. To do that, we must be cognisant of their learning and developmental needs. So I teach at a low progress school, where many students learn to manage their difficulties like dyslexia and ADHD. Poor working memory and undeveloped emotional regulation are all in a day’s work for me.

In order to instill good habits, I must help them organise their minds and surroundings. So, I just learnt yesterday that some of them don’t remember their mobile number. I have already assigned the task of memorising their contact number as their homework. I expect to teach them how to chunk information into smaller bits so that they can concentrate their effort in acquiring information, bit by bit.

Moving forward, I hope to help them form good habits by sharing with them how I formulate SMART goals. For example, I plan to use my TRUST debit card on food and groceries five times this month so that I qualify for a higher interest rate. I believe that sharing my life authentically helps them to apply the concept of SMART goals themselves.
