Stacker News Improvement ideas
  • On clicking a username on any post or comment - it should be easy to follow that users posts. There can be a subscribe button on the users profile page - there can be a view of all the latest posts by that user.
  • users can decide to add their approximate GPS location randomised in a 50 kilometer circle - posts from people nearby that circle can be made more visible in the nearby section
  • integration with robosats to buy and sell cryptos with p2p settlement with nearby people ( using the same banking system to settle the p2p transactions ) or people anywhere across the globe
  • maybe robosats can be a specialised territory

We don't have enough traffic where that would work for anyone but people in extremely dense urban areas.

You can sub to a user from their profile. Click the ellipsis next to their name for subscribe options

yes. but it can be made more visible as a Subscribe Button. i think.

I wrote my script in JS, haven't open-sourced it yet.

Would be cool to see an auto post from @sn when a territory becomes a "ghost town" , or a new one is founded.
We need a town crier for now, tracking the coming and going of territories.
reply
A pinned post at the top of the page with the title "Relevant events in stacker news planet territories" could have automatic comments.

FOMO? I don't think is needed... PoW always works, just keep the noise out, find your interests and zap accordingly. Laziness bring you to other paths

Day 32 of posting mining earnings from the day before: 743 sats on 18Jan2024! Running total: 25,070 sats!
Someone gave me at least a 10k sats zap, to motivate me to play more and zap other Stackers more sats. Well I am gonna have fun and spread his kindness around. Changed my default zap to 168 because in Chinese, it sounds like “prosper all the way”!
Already, I notice a darkish green zap whenever I zap others. I like the different colour!

Where are you guys looking for estimation of onchain fees?
I primarily used mempool dot space to look at the sats/vbyte but noticed that my wallet apps estimate way more volatile fees...

wallet apps estimate way more volatile fees
I noticed that too, so I manually adjust it according to the mempool.
reply
Is it to give more guarantees that it will be included in the next block?
reply
I guess so, but it's the fee is too much extra sometimes - I try to avoid doing any urgent transfers and always prepare things in advance when it's a slightly low fee.

Good morning gang!!! Friday has arrived and the weekend is upon us!! Let us reflect on how was our strategy for this week and see if it was productive or we feel satisfied with the results, use the weekend to think of a new strategy if it didn't work, or use the weekend to just relax and bask in the fruits of what we have reaped. Enjoy, my friend, it has been well deserved. May your friday be amazing and fruitful, you, my good friend, are awesome and don't forget that. You are important and what you do matters, so keep on keeping on. Be well and stay frosty!!

I've just realized that the AI territory is missing. Sad. The most important technology in our lifetime doesn't even have a territory. How to buy an archived territory?
reply
My recollection is that it will sit abandoned for 30 days unless the owner pays the mortgage. After that anyone can take it over.

Thought of the day: For multi-sig, I would rather store one of my back-ups in a bank safety deposit box than use one of the custodial companies (Casa et al.)
reply
True… but Lodger could help if you lost your password… or help the Government even if you didn’t
reply
In both cases one is susceptible to the custodian rugging the keys (which is why we have redundancy!), but I think the SDB is superior for several reasons:
Proof of Tamper: Good security practice is to use anti-tamper seals on your physical back-ups. This way you know if the key has been accessed and can subsequently rotate it. This is not possible with the online custodian, and you have to take their word that the key hasn't been compromised.
Proof of Identity: Depending on policy, the bank SDB can only be accessed in-person by the owner. One would need a rather convincing doppelganger to circumvent this check. Meanwhile, the online custodians likely have identification systems that can be gamed by increasingly sophisticated AI fakes.
Privacy: Odd that I should bring this up for a KYC bank, but it's noteworthy that the bank does not need to access the xPub quorum to store your key. While the bank knows who you are and that you have a box, they do not know the contents (or even that it's Bitcoin-related at all). The online custodians meanwhile have access to all wallet information.
For the record: I only think a SDB is worth it if one does not otherwise have access to enough secure locations to geographically distribute their back-ups.
reply
Not every SDB is in a bank. And according to my research, certain regulations regarding "third-party access" only apply to SDBs in banks. But don't trust, verify.
reply
It depends on your local regulations, but one should assume the key could be compromised at any point regardless of law. That's why anti-tamper + semi-regular checks are so necessary.
reply
There may be an argument for using both - one as deep and one as intermediate storage. Not sure on the costs of a SDB though… As a plus I think you can authorise access to someone else with all the checks in place.
reply
Somewhere in the ballpark of £20-30 a month. One has to assess whether or not the cost is worth it, but I'm assuming that custodial multi-sig wouldn't be considered for anything other than large amounts to begin with.
reply
It depends on how high we go!
As an aside, I pretty disappointed that after 100’s years of technological innovation and financial progress we are still reduced to burying our money like Long John Silver, a Roman Legionaire or Napoleonic Soldier…

sharing what I meant with the formula: create + zap = stack
As a stacker: stacks = 90% * sats from posts and comments that you created + daily rewards
for example, I made two posts yesterday.
  • post 1. stacked 23026 *90% = 20723.4
  • post 2. stacked 1993 *90% =1793.7
  • zapping rewards from yesterday is 6718.914
so my stacks was 20723.4 + 1793.7 + 6718.914 = 29236.014
but SN's smallest denomination is satoshi not millisatoshi, so it's 29236 sats; And I didn't include the comments, I wonder how @ekzyis count all his daily stacks - did you get the number from here or add them manually? 🤔
Takeaway
You need to give before receiving - it's like planting a tree, you need to put some effort before even getting fruits from it. 🌳 and the beautiful things about tree planting on the internet is you never know what serendipities you would attract to.

Say it louder for those in at the back!!
The more you zap the higher your returns.
As an example yesterday I ran a small competition, it was only for 1ksats. 40 comments, 3k~ sats spent in zapping comments. The actual post itself... 300~ It seems engagement is up which is good, but it seems a lot of users are still "diamond handing" their sats.
