I haven't really been on nostr in a year or so, but playing around now it seems like there are WAY fewer zaps. There are some high-profile mega-zapped posts, but almost all posts and conversations are bereft of zaps. What happened? Recession?

The great thing about stacker news is that zaps completely replace likes.

On nostr you have to make a cognitive decision whether to like or zap - and when you're forced to think about that choice it reminds you one of them is free and the other isn't.

Nostr would be much better without the regular likes and just the zaps.

100% 100% 100%

Anyone can afford a single sat zap, and who the fuck cares about a "heart" like? Go to Facebook.

reply

I like very much what you say. Good job

EDIT β€” JUST KIDDING, have some sats too πŸ’°

reply

Sooner or later one client will be zap-only only for hard-core nostriches/bitcoiners

reply

I agree on this with you Buildig zap-only or zap-first clients will increase the zaps and the adoption of the v4v model

reply

On amethyst is even worse, you have to scan a QR for every zap

reply

I don't. Amethyst with Alby, and WOS before that. I used to win the zapathons it was so fast.

reply

I cannot find where to add a wallet or Alby

reply

Press and hold the zap icon on a note

reply

ffs! thankyou! why is this not in settings?!

reply

Never thought about that but ur right

reply

People are more generous than ever here on SN, as shown by my recent SN post.

Nostr is just too large a space currently. Smaller communities within Nostr will foster more sat sharing IMHO. In 2022, Nostr posts were going crazy here. It’s time will come again.

Currently the sense of connection with personalities & topics of interest is lacking in clients, and that is perhaps showing its face in the zaps.

reply

Yep, you nailed it. I would also add much higher signal to noise here vs Nostr.

reply

We need better filters for Nostr

reply

Yes that was excellent. I just mean nostr, not stacker.

reply

Just another random thought. It's funny people are so excited to zap the richest people on nostr. Literal BILLIONAIRES.

reply

LOL. Same as twitter and all the rest.

reply

As a damus mobile user on my main nostr account the zapple pay integration is much more cumbersome than the initial zap feature that apple made them shut down. That's part of it and I think the thrill is gone.

reply

zaps are more valuable now ;) and the recession in some parts is not helping either, I guess. is it your impression? or is it possible to see this data somewhere:?

reply

Just my impression, sorry if I misrepresented it as backed by stats.

A year+ ago it was just ALL about zapping. I think it was just so novel. But also it seemed like the MAIN way to "upvote" -- now it's more hearts and reposts...

reply

Growth & change my man. Growth and change

reply

If Nostr clients had zap-ordered views of content, then maybe people would zap in order to bump up the good stuff. The reverse chronological timeline is more about quantity than quality.

reply

That's a great suggestion and great point. I didn't think about it that way, but there's a reason why Reddit sorts the way it does AND let's you change the sort view.

reply

I noticed that since a few months back, I think the initial new fun thing faded, and there are not many incentives for people to zap on Nostr because there is like a million posts every day with random things. Here in SN it works, people interact on specific topics, they give opinions, they help and people pay for value. Nostr is like anarchy.

reply

Agree. Until people figure out how to "subscribe", tag, and curate their feed, it's gonna be a shitshow.

reply

Be the change you want to see in the world!

reply

Yeah I zap more as the USD price gets higher. But my conundrum is that I really only want to zap thoughtful posts, but to encourage zapping by others I would need to zap prolifically and indiscriminately...

reply

Or have an AI bot πŸ€– do it?

reply

"Stack SATs, ZAP Regularly and Stay Humble"

reply

Nostr clients need to remove the like buttons. It's self-sabotaging. Nostr value, censorship-resistance, is largely enabled by bitcoin, through zaps.

This is what SN has gotten right from the start.

reply

Yeah, the zapping is less, but I assume a lot of people went over to bluesky.

reply

I’m a zap addict ZAP

reply

I think Nostr is too ego-focused. On SN you have to care a bit about the content to read the author's name and even then it's just cold blue lettering. I wonder what it'd be like if Nostr accounts started removing their profile images in service of the content. I prefer to reward good content rather than egos. It's sad what @joda said about people zapping the billionaires.

reply

Sats are more and more expensive in fiat currencies, so I guess people think twice before they zap. Same for fountain, it’s paying out literally single digits sats now. Bitcoin Magazine app died around ETF approval already (at least in my case).

reply

Yeah I first got Fountain to earn sats, now I only use it to zap content producers. Functionality is fine, but buggy

reply

The hype died off. Hopefully it will come back again

reply

Yeah I noticed that too. Don't know what happened. Stinginess? novelty worn off? tbf, i use Amethyst on android and about 50% of the time I get an error message when I try to zap, so I wonder if other people are running into zapping probs and have just given up.

reply

I connected to Alby and don't seem to have problems on amethyst.

You could try the new primal app. It seems to use less battery and memory for me, and the connect to Alby wallet works without issue.

reply

They move here. (joke)

Look at the bottom. Reward pool has increased since I came here

reply

I love SN, don't get me wrong, but it would be ironic to move from nostr TO a centralized, censorable, moderated platform with a default-custodial wallet.

But point taken. I do zap here more than on nostr. But that's mostly because I zap 20x more for a thoughtful comment than for a meme repost or a photo of your carnivore breakfast.

reply

I've noticed this as well. We definitely need some beautiful+user friendly zap-only apps to start getting over this fiat "likes" craze

reply

tolerable πŸ˜† just pray it doesn't come to be like The Great Depression

reply

I still zap on nostr. if I wanted to like posts, I'd use Facebook

reply

If Nostr becomes much similar to SN, would that be good? Yes, the idea about replacing like 'heart' with Bitcoin 'B' may prove far better.
