I hate lotteries at the best of times..
Yes, me too. If one is motivated to be part of SN community for the rewards or this kind of competition, it means that he/she doesn't understand the mission of Stacker News.

Stacker News are the ones running the competition and experimenting with psychological manipulation in the first place. Has it occurred to you that people might leave because they are not comfortable being experimented on - not because they aren't getting rewards?

interesting. Adding that experiments with the rewards is not new. It was the random rewards experiment before. It seems they keep experimenting until they find something that works best. I understand. Experiment and analyze is a scientific method that gives good results. I don't see how it could be done without using people in the experiment. We'll see how it goes.

did you also hate the daily rewards?
reply
Yes - in some of the trialled formats.
The OP suggested the MSM is a competition and I am likening it to a lottery.
A number of posters are questioning its value and suggesting it is unfair. I think they would prefer to see the rewards as more directly linked to their efforts on a daily basis rather than waiting for the monthly. I do understand how it works - I just don’t like it.

I agree, it has the lottery style structure of the descending prize pool with the big prize at the top getting less and less as you go down the ranking. I immediately thought the same when I saw that. But there's also the competition element to it too.
