Dear experienced stackers and newbies,
How are you doing? How is your experience on SN these 4-5 first days of Million Sat Madness?
How do you feel waking up in the morning and seeing no daily rewards for your posts, comments, and zaps?
Probably, the experienced stacker will answer that they are not receiving daily rewards, but they are working hard to rank higher for the winning one prex of MSM.
But I'm curious to know how newbies are going to answer this question. I mean, being aware that they cannot by no means compete with the experienced stackers for being ranked higher, how do they feel about not receiving daily rewards for the entire month?
Speaking from my perspective, I won't make it into the first 64 positions for the month-end rewards. It makes me feel uncomfortable enough.
I would also share another thought that came to my mind these days. We talk about the beauty of Bitcoin and blockchain, which are a decentralized system, while the experiment of MSM looks like an attempt to centralize the rewarding system of Stacker News.
The daily reward system is more decentralized, while the Million Sat Madness is a more centralized system. In the first one, everyone who is active by posting, commenting, and zapping has a chance to be rewarded every day, even if the rewards could be very low or very high, but all have a chance if they are active. For that reason, I consider it a decentralized system. In the second one, at the end of the month, only those ranked in the top 64 positions will be rewarded, while the rest will receive no rewards regardless of their activity. That's why this sounds like a centralized reward system to me.
I have the impression that if MSM continues in the coming months, a lot of SN users (especially newbies) will lose their interest and will leave the forum. And I'm not sure if this is a good thing for SN.
I would prefer the first one, i.e. the daily rewards, because everyone can be rewarded: newbies with small amounts and the experienced ones with high amounts.
What do you think, Stacker?
Speaking from my perspective, I won't make it into the first 64 positions for the month-end rewards
You are wrong. You can do it. You just didn't find "your way" up. Keep going. What many noob stackers still do not get it is that it doesn't matter how many sats are you zaping or receiving... Is more about WHAT are you doing with those zaps. zaps not equal sats ! This is not a contest of "who earn more sats", but a contest of who zap, comment, post more.
a lot of SN users (especially newbies) will lose their interest and will leave the forum. And I'm not sure if this is a good thing for SN.
As I said many times: Bitcoin is not for the weak, only for brave.
but now I am talking too much...

you nailed it.
the task of getting into the top 64 (especially only 5 days into million sat madness) is not a very difficult one.
in addition, all stackers continue to receive all the zaps they normally would. it’s only the bonus sats that are pooled together for million sat madness.
there are lots of profitable stackers who are seeing their balance increase every single day.

I would like to believe that Bitcoin is for everyone, but anyway… different opinions.

Please tell me if you still believe that these NPCs could handle a BTC wallet.
Then ask yourself if Bitcoin is for everyone. Only when you will try to onboard 100 clueless nocoiners you will realize in what fucked up world we are.

Probably not!

I do have anxiety now like will I make it in the top 64?
But it’s all moot to me anyways I’m here to kick start the circular economy. Any sats I do earn go right back to the stackers or my favorite projects on geyser.
I like coming here to help pass time when I’m bored at work or have downtime throughout the day. Also sn prevents me from doom scrolling on damus or X.
I like seeing what people are posting and give them a zap because I am addicted to zapping it’s truly amazing in 2024 with the tap of my thumb I’m sending money to strangers with no middle man. No bank. No PayPal! I absolutely love it
Rewards or not ill be here zapping until I run out of sats or LN has a zero day bug and the network breaks

Million sat madness has absolutely zero influence on my view of stacker news. It will in no way drive me away. If anything, as a newbie, I think it is a cool feature.
I can't imagine having more of an opposite reaction to this.

The zaps are still the same, plus you may receive more since there are people who want to get into the top 64, I don't see it as bad, the only thing that has changed is that you don't receive daily rewards which go to the MSM fund

I’m all for daily rewards, but I’m still posting either way! I enjoy the content / community.

I know I am not going to get any rewards. But I don't think I am going away from SN. I'm not sure if the quality of the posts is going to be improved with the competition. I don't like competitions in general. But life is like a competition itself. Let's see how the experiment goes this month. If many users leave SN, I'm ok with it. I don't like users that are here only for the rewards.

I’m sure that it’ll not be improved at all. There are many stackers who are posting and commenting a lot these days just for the competition, hopping they’ll be ranked higher.
I don’t believe that quantity is equal to quality!
However, I also see that there are good stackers who continue to post as usually, without running behind the rank.

Yes, me too. If one is motivated to be part of SN community for the rewards or this kind of competition, it means that he/she doesn't understand the mission of Stacker News.

Stacker News are the ones running the competition and experimenting with psychological manipulation in the first place. Has it occurred to you that people might leave because they are not comfortable being experimented on - not because they aren't getting rewards?

interesting. Adding that experiments with the rewards is not new. It was the random rewards experiment before. It seems they keep experimenting until they find something that works best. I understand. Experiment and analyze is a scientific method that gives good results. I don't see how it could be done without using people in the experiment. We'll see how it goes.

did you also hate the daily rewards?
reply
Yes - in some of the trialled formats.
The OP suggested the MSM is a competition and I am likening it to a lottery.
A number of posters are questioning its value and suggesting it is unfair. I think they would prefer to see the rewards as more directly linked to their efforts on a daily basis rather than waiting for the monthly. I do understand how it works - I just don’t like it.
reply
I agree, it has the lottery style structure of the descending prize pool with the big prize at the top getting less and less as you go down the ranking. I immediately thought the same when I saw that. But there's also the competition element to it too.

Daily rewards are like a sprint, while MSM is a marathon

As a founder that definitely needs to be more active, SN March Madness is working to get me more involved in my territory and brainstorming how to add more value to SN. Definitely a interesting idea to stretch it out for a month, and I'm excited to see where we all end up at the end.
That being said, daily rewards seem much better default for the site. I'm thinking about next week or 75% of the way through March, trying to explain to newcomers that there's a reward pool put you're probably not getting "reward sats" until next month.
Which is fine with me, it's better to try new things.

I have already voiced my opinion on this. I won't repeat myself too much but I'm not in favour of the competition style whereby a lot of people do work and a select few benefit from everyone's hard work, combined with the vehicle used to extract this value and POW from everyone - carrot dangling, exclusive rewards and competition.
If I had to choose, I would say daily rewards but I didn't like the rewards being awarded for zapping top posts and comments early. That lead to good content and comments being ignored while newer content gets all the attention. That also leads to problems with time zones/differences (users in certain timezones are disadvantaged/advantaged). I also noticed, possibly because of this, the "life cycle" of posts (from my perspective) seemed to be anything from an hour up to 24 hours and possibly around 48 for a popular post - but that's just my guess, there might be more accurate data in terms of lifecycle of posts.
The whole rewards systems (if there is to be one) needs to be more equitable. Is there any way we can't just share content, thoughts, ideas etc and just enjoy time interacting with and zapping each other? Does it have to be a system to manipulated, gamed and incentivized?
In short, I don't like being experimented on. It's reminiscent of the controlled, centralised social media and I thought SN was different. It also reminds me of school and fiat jobs with incentive schemes and the like, which I have previously addressed (it also reminds me of taxation).
I also think any competition style of reward needs to be on top of the usual rewards people get and possibly weekly, rather than monthly (too long and too much hype, detracting from the purpose of the SN). That's probably because nobody likes to have something, get used to having it and then have it taken away from them - and especially if it's removed and given to someone else.
Anyhow.. that's just my mental vomit for today lol! It may or may not be popular but I'll say it anyway 😆😂

Oh no! I thought I was out, but they keep pulling me back in!
Where the hell did I put that xanax bottle?

Cool little experiment, but not the way to go in my opinion. I think that small daily rewards are a stronger incentive to participate in a meaningful way to the growth of the community. Genuine question: was this a unilateral decision from the core developers or was it ever asked to the community?

Missing old Sats, I use to receive sats sometime via daily rewards, now i am losing this opportunity after this MSM shit...

I prefer the predictability and stability of Daily Sats, but generally I’m a person who likes change. I am intrigued and amused by the way I have been adapting to Million Sats Madness - posting more, thinking about who to zap and stuff like that.
I am particularly happy about the increase in my output. I never knew I have so much writing inside me 😝
