Stacker News are the ones running the competition and experimenting with psychological manipulation in the first place.
Has it occurred to you that people might leave because they are not comfortable being experimented on - not because they aren't getting rewards?

interesting. Adding that experiments with the rewards is not new. It was the random rewards experiment before. It seems they keep experimenting until they find something that works best. I understand. Experiment and analyze is a scientific method that gives good results. I don't see how it could be done without using people in the experiment. We'll see how it goes.
