This seems like an innovative and promising feature at first glance. Do you know how much it costs to send change to an LN channel? In what situations would it be advantageous to use this feature?

Didn't try it yet, just sharing info.
It makes sense for small size change utxo to send it to ln, because if the onchain fees are high enough it may become unusable or uneconomical to use.
A nice way to top up channels by spending onchain
