Now, this is purely an opinion. I have not done research and I haven't even thought it throw for that long. Is more like an idea I have of the future, a hunch if you allow me. Just want to record this thought.
The term "mining hardware" will fade away from people's mind in generations to come. But why?
Is not because the term is used in an incorrect way, or have this bad connotations (like mining gold for example, bad for the planet), but rather the use of home appliances. Allow me to articulate it a bit more:
Home appliances are always use for an specific purpose, and that's make our life's easier A.K.A save time. Dishwasher help us with the dishes so we don't have wash them by hand, washer help us with cloth, and so on...
In this generation we don't even think about all the technology behind all this innovation, we only use them for the purpose they were built for. Bitcoin "mining" equipment is the same.
Virtually ANYTHING can have a "bitcoin miner" inside of it (I'm exaggerating, you get the idea). If somehow making an appliance that "mines" bitcoin, the idea that people in the future will call it "washer-miner" would be kind of far fetch. The word "mining" itself will fade in the background, just like all this other components domestic appliances use that most of us have no clue.

I currently have an S9 in my home for heating. I'm finishing up a case for it so it's less obtrusive. Tuck all the wires away. To me, it's just the 'heater'.
As a heater, it works really well for a small apartment. And due to it running Braiins OS+, I can control the exact wattage I'm using for power control.
Now, I bought my S9 because it could heat my home efficiently & was bitcoin related - I could have easily have bought a bitaxe /nerdminer & learned how to mine that way. It's because of it's dual purpose that I chose to have it.
If it was just a miner and couldn't serve that dual purpose - maybe I would have went with something else, maybe smaller. If it was just a heater and didn't mine - I probably wouldn't have gone through the effort of making it more quiet. I probably would have went with something else.
There are commercially made miners that are also heaters out there - but they have payment share schemes for mined bitcoin, and they are also more expensive than a standard heater.
Unless the individual is keen on bitcoin to begin with, they're not going to bother with faffing with mining pools, payment schemes, or overpriced hardware just to do something as straightforward as keeping themselves warm.

Same here, I own an S9 and bought the heater case from cryptocloaks.
Right now I see that the only people that do things kind of things with dual purpose use cases are Bitcoiners. Down the road I don't see it that way tho. To me, every technology gets smaller, faster and user friendly.
I don't think I might be alive to see it, but there is something about mining and everyday use appliances that really catches my attention.
I envision something as small as a nerdminer connected to fridges and getting more hashrate than the greatest and lastest like the Bitmain Antminer Kas Miner KS5 Pro.

what if you stuffed a nerdminer into a surge protector, or extension strip? it's a device that is almost always plugged into the wall anyway

Indeed. The mining process is important but doesn't do much if it doesn't serve a dual-purpose.
The idea that you can stuff bitcoin everywhere is true, but not necessary if for example doesn't heat your shed or heat your hot tub while mining.
Not sure if your comment was sarcastic or not but made me realize that lol

As you see, they offer discounts in exchange for a share of any bitcoin mined.
for almost the same price as their 'heat with benefits' I could buy a prebuilt heater case + miner like @Luis. For $55 more I can get a thermometer to adjust using an app & degrees rather than wattage. And I wouldn't have to share my mined bitcoin with anyone else to do it either.
