Does anyone else have a fascination with cardboard?
I keep seeing many things made out of cardboard, which is really cool!
Cardboard olympic beds, chairs, desks, tables, and stuff.
Your imagination is the only limit.
I think one of my next projects will be to make a small desk and chair for my kids.
Hopefully they want to help a bit so they can enjoy the process with me.
Anyone else have a fascination with cardboard and all the things it can make?

Such an interesting topic has been vastly explored in architecture for modelling out designs at scale
https://m.stacker.news/22658https://m.stacker.news/22659
... and, more specifically, in interior design used as structural material.

But not only related with it. It's a strong and versatile material, so easy to model with, that allow it to be used in different ways:

And why not, also for prototyping a Ui!

I know Frank Gehry was an artist and made furniture out of cardboard.
He was a very interesting character.
He made so many designs, this one was designed in 1970 and manufactured in 1982.
He was very much ahead of his time!

I found these cardboard ballistic drones from Australia given to Ukraine pretty mind blowing.

Very cool!
You can do a lot with cardboard, as long as you dont limit yourself!

What kind of cardboard are we talking about? Plain old shipping box corrugated stuff or is there something stronger to which you are referring?

Yeah, just regular corrugated cardboard.
I guess double or triple walled corrugated would be stronger, but just the regular corrugated is enough for most things.

this is very relevant to me, I am currently working on turning my leftover cardboard from my moving boxes into furnishings for my home. First project I thought would be manageable enough to start is a lamp stand. It's halfway done, but I've lost motivation, now just have a pile of cardboard. Will get there eventually

Yeah, you can do a lot with the right tools.
All it takes is a good knife and some scissors.
The other day I was making a small test piece, a small table.
It took a bit of time to get the measurments right so that everything lined up, but it worked well.
My kids were super excited, too.
Now they want to try a larger one!

Really practical hobby. Imagine it’s way way quicker to iterate on prototype designs with cardboard. But didn’t know this was a thing beyond that.
My mind instantly goes to thinking central planners would have us build entire homes out of cardboard if they could pull it off 😅
Silly question though - is there such a thing as water/fire-resistant cardboard?

You could try using some water-proof spray. I know there's also fire-proof sprays and paints, but not sure if it makes sense. At certain temperature it will burn anyway

I know they make cardboard that is waxed, not 100% waterproof, but better than normal cardboard.
