fellows, please tell me, if you're in conversation with someone new, what's something they could say that would convince you they're too normal
"The New York Times had an interesting article..."
Bonus answer from my wife:
"My favorite show is NCIS."

A recent example: was in a bbq line with someone who went out of their way to explain how horrified they are by slavery.

this got my eyebrows way up high, that's wild

"You might be surprised to hear, given how common it is these days, that I'm not a Nazi."
Back when I was app-dating, I'd browse my competition's profiles. For the life of me, I couldn't understand why most of them declared themselves "feminists." Feminism had always meant equality of opportunity to me, so I was like "duh," but boy did I miss the memo of what it meant to some people.

  • they say "what do u think about Iran?" or any other current controversial program.
  • being fixated on the housing and rental markets.
  • being excited about mainstream media culture, in a negative or positive way, does not matter.
  • talking about Apple Vision Pro or any other latest glamorous consumer tech

define "too normal"
reply
hmm kinda hard, but I should certainly define it, let's see it's like when you take in some piece of how they construct either their personality or their worldview, and you have a deep well of opinion/experience to unleash about it but you know they can't take it in
reply
but then I think you can learn something from different people, even from really normal ones, like I have no problem hanging out even with village people, they got great life skills:)
I do get what you mean.
reply
So you are defining cognitive dissonance... right.
reply
cognitive dissonance would apply as a term in what I'm describing, but I'm referring to a moment in conversation and social introduction
reply
you'd probably know what I mean if you ever talk to people in person

Avoid the current hot debate options / politics for me esp at first. If that’s something you jump in and dive into it’s a no for me. Same with super opinionated topics

Nailed it. It's a fixation on the current thing.

Yeah as someone who lives in DC I see why it tends to be at the top of lonely list city charts because whenever you go out it is always politics and this or that. I’ve waived my white flag for DC dating for now just because of how toxic and screwed up it is
