During this morning's SN Q1 recap/Q2 roadmap call @kr mentioned how little referral links were being utilized.
In response. I commented the following:
"Referral program is going to remain a challenge. Most stackers prefer to remain nym on SN and the most likely referrals would be to people they know in the real world. This likely prevents them from referring even though they love and support SN."
While I think referrals uptake may remain challenged, I do think invite links with sats loaded might be a good option for territory marketing. So I tested them today. I create up a 1000 sat invite link with a 5 invitee maximum and sent the first one to myself. It worked perfectly.
Sent it via DM from my Stacker Sports nostr account to my grayruby nostr account. Here is what it looked like when I clicked on the link.
I clicked the link and signed up as a new account and received the sats immediately.
In my grayruby SN account I received the following notification:
In future it would be great if there were territory invite links as well "you have been invited to join the conversation in Stacker Sports. A 1000 sat gift is waiting for you when you sign up today".
I know this doesn't necessarily solve my concerns over stackers wanting to remain nym, thus being apprehensive about using referral links, but it might serve as a good marketing tool for territories. There are a number of people I talk sports with on Nostr. I can use the links to entice them to continue the conversation on SN.
Would like to hear feedback from other stackers and territory founders, what do you think about invite links and have you tried using them to bring new users onboard?
Thanks for reading.
Cheers, GR

We have been testing them at in-person Bitcoin meetups, I think they can be effective for onboarding friends and family.
just a reminder for all who aren’t aware, it’s important to not share these invite links publicly because bots will find them and take all the sats you have allocated to onboarding new stackers.
private messages, texts, emails, etc… are probably the best way to share invite links.
referral links are designed to be shared publicly, but don’t come with a sat gift for the person who claims them.

Good advice. Meetups make a lot of sense.

I think it is a great feature. I made a set of 5 with the gift being 1000 sats. I posted the link on nostr. They got used up quickly. When I did the same with 500 sats, no one used them so far. Interesting.

1k feels like the right number. Enough to entice people but not so much that they are likely to just do it for the sats and never use the site.

I have not for territories, but I have succeeded with two of them. One was someone I met IRL and the other was through Orange Pill app.

I never thought about SN pilling through OPA. Might be a good idea. I signed up for OPA when it first launched but then cancelled after a month when there was no one anywhere near me on the app.

It is hit or miss.

So, far I have referred 4 or 5 people who I already know in real life. And I did this by in person meet up. This is the best way, I suppose.

Nice. Have they joined SN?

I've been meaning to put an invite link on Minds in a boosted post. I have a bunch of stupid Minds tokens and that's the best use I could think of for them.
reply
Heh, that reminds me I have a bunch of stupid minds tokens as well, lol.

Is there any sat limit to these links?
reply
Not that I can functionally see but I am sure if you try to spend more than the sats in your wallet there would be some restriction.

It'll say the "this invite link has no more sats" when your balance can't gift the sats or the invite limit is reached.

noted. thanks

I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

The question is: How many of these news sign-ups are going to stay and use SN?
I foresee many sat farmers on the horizon...
reply
It's a good question but it is still worth the risk. There will always be people who sign up to get the "free" thing and then leave right after.
reply
Great solution!

Oh, thanks for pointing out that we do reveal your nym even with invite links. I forgot about that in my reply here.
reply
Yes, but I am ok with this if it is for territory marketing through my stacker sports or grayruby account. Maybe not so much for sn pilling my neighbour.
reply
Referral links would probably be used more if there was a way to anonymize them. That way users could freely post them in public without worrying about it being traced back to their profile.
