if you measure lifespan based on number of heartbeats, all mammals basically converge on 1-2 billion heartbeats per lifetime.
reply
If you regularly do sports, your average heartbeat rate is lower. I wonder if that contributes to the lifespan?
reply
i think so
reply
Super interesting and makes perfect sense. A while ago I read that if you can lower your heart rate you can live longer. This confirms what I read.

Nice chart. I wonder what the average human lifespan will be in 2080. Is it still increasing at the same pace from 1950 until present?
reply
I don't believe it, but if they discover some revolutionary new medicine, maybe.

Infant mortality is a big problem in Africa.
You can’t have long life expectancy if infant mortality is high
reply
Thanks. Most of that change was due to reduced infant mortality wasn't it?
reply
I don't see the connection between the decrease in infant mortality and the increase in average life expectancy. I think it's mainly due to discoveries in the field of medicine, drugs and technology.
reply
It’s both
People in the 1800s lived to 80 or 90 years if they survived as an infant.
reply
Yes
Most of that was due to drop in infant mortality. Life expectancy at birth is not meaningful for longevity, especially in prior centuries.

Most but not all
John Adams died when he was 90 in 1826

John Adams last day
July 4, 1826 (aged 90) Quincy, Massachusetts, U.S.

Wow 200 years. I do think humans will eventually get to a 200 year lifespan but I don't know how human we will be when we do.
reply
actually, maybe quite young looking. With genetic treatment that makes you younger not older. Already achieved on mice. But it will probably be only for millionaires. edit: I should have said, for those who have at least a full bitcoin :)

'Oldest human' dies in Indonesia 'aged 146' https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-39768321
Now imagine being 200 years old

weasel is only 1 to 2 years? That is kind of sad...
reply
So the average is only somewhere around 25000 days for humans!!!
